Reliance Jio launches Smartphones and laptops

Reliance Jio plans to launch an affordable 5G-ready Android smartphone during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) later this year. According to online reports, the affordable 5G-ready smartphone by Reliance is being made in partnership with Google may be complete by the second quarter of 2021. Jio is also working on JioBook, an affordable laptop, that is likely to roll out with the 5G smartphone, also at the AGM 2021.

Reliance JioBook would not be based on X86 operating systems such as Windows/Linux. Instead, it is expected to come with a custom Android version. It was also spotted online running a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 chipset combined with the Snapdragon X12 LTE modem. Early Reliance JioBook prototypes have been spotted online with a Windows Key, which will very likely be replaced in subsequent revisions. The development of the JioBook has reportedly begun in early September last year and the device is said to reach the Product Validation Test stage by mid-April.

As far as the specifications and features are concerned, the JioBook will feature an HD (1,366×768 pixels) display and Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 SoC paired with Snapdragon X12 4G modem. It is tipped to feature up to 4GB of LPDDR4x RAM and up to 64GB of eMMC storage. There will be several connectivity options on the smartphone including a Mini-HDMI connector, dual-band Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.

Jio’s 5G smartphone will run on Android Go OS and include entry-level specifications. The same report also states that Reliance Jio is working on Android-based JioOS for the smartphone. “The development of the phone is on track. The specifications have been finalised. However, there are ongoing discussions on the operating system, given that it will require deep integration of Jio services”, according to the sources.

Jio has joined hands with technology behemoth Google to build this affordable smartphone offering and is working on a May-June timeline to complete the research & development. RIL during its previous AGM announced a two-pronged alliance with Google. The first bit involved the acquisition of a 7.73 per cent stake in Jio Platforms by Google. Meanwhile, the second bit of the alliance involved a commercial agreement with Google to jointly develop an entry-level, 4G smartphone that can also support 5G in future.

Along with smartphones and laptops, Reliance Jio is also working on a next-gen JioGlass mixed reality device for 3D and virtual interactions, with potential applications in the industrial and manufacturing sector. The Jio Glass is expected to be a lightweight device connected to a smartphone. The company has said that it will come with 25 in-built apps to allow augmented reality video meetings and more. The product would be powered by Jio’s indigenous 5G solution.
