Renesas to acquire Steradian to expand market reach in the radar market

Renesas Electronics of Japan has announced that it has signed a binding contract to buy India’s fabless Steradian Semiconductors, which offers 4D imaging radar systems, for an undisclosed sum of money.

According to Renesas, the transaction is anticipated to close by the end of 2022, excluding any unusual closing conditions. Renesas will increase the scope of its automotive and industrial sensing solution offerings and expand its radar market reach by acquiring Steradian’s radar technology.

The demand for automotive sensor fusion is increasing due to the development of ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems) in the automotive industry. This technology enables precise and accurate object detection of a vehicle’s surroundings by combining data from multiple sensors, such as cameras, radar, and LiDAR (light detection and ranging).

In particular, radar can consistently locate things over great distances, day or night, and even in severe weather or other environmental factors. Because of these factors, radar is regarded as a crucial sensing technology for ADAS, and Renesas projects that during the following five years, the number of radar sensors placed in vehicles will triple.

Hidetoshi Shibata, President and CEO of Renesas, said, “Radar is an indispensable technology for ADAS, which uses a complex combination of various sensors. The addition of Steradian’s superb radar technology and engineering talent will allow us to extend our leadership in the automotive segments. We will also leverage their technology for industrial applications to drive our mid- to long-term business growth in both segments.”

“Renesas’ industry-leading portfolio of embedded solutions and broad customer base serve as an ideal foundation to maximize Steradian’s radar technology worldwide,” said Gireesh Rajendran, CEO of Steradian. “By working together with the Renesas team, we will continue to develop innovative radar solutions that deliver the high performance, small footprint and low power consumption that our customers desire.”

Steradian is a start-up firm that was established in 2016 and has a wealth of knowledge in radar technology. Renesas stated that Steradian’s 4D radar transceivers, which operate in the 76-81GHz range, provide a high level of integration in a tiny form factor and good power efficiency. To create automotive radar products, Renesas will make use of Steradian’s design resources and expertise. Sample shipments are expected to begin by the end of 2022.

The company aims to establish comprehensive automotive radar systems that integrate object recognition software, power management ICs (PMICs), and timing devices with ADAS SoCs for processing radar signals. Together, these solutions will accelerate the development of new products and simplify the design of automotive radar systems.

Since 2018, Renesas and Steradian have worked together primarily on industrial applications. The use of Steradian’s radar technology in home security systems, including surveillance, traffic monitoring for pedestrians, vehicles, and motorcyclists, HMI (human-machine interface) systems that recognise gestures, and docking systems in airport terminals is anticipated.

Moreover, Steradian offers transceiver ICs, complete modules with antennas, and object identification software stacks as targeted solutions for various applications.
