UpGrad, The edtech unicorn, has committed to invest an extra INR 320 crore (almost $40 million) in the platform to construct Harappa Global School of Leadership after earlier this year acquiring Harappa Education, a platform for the development of leadership and communication skills in New Delhi.

UpGrad can better serve working professionals with its soft-skill and leadership offerings according to the most recent announcement.

The funding will be used by Harappa Education to create a range of leadership programs that are tailored to different sectors and leadership levels, the firm said in a statement. The business also intends to hire individuals to design the program, plan and develop its pedagogy and content, and handle its marketing.

The Leadership School will start by providing live-only programs geared toward professionals in the middle of their careers, beginning with the Accelerated Management Program. The Leadership School will also offer the Women’s Leadership Program and the Design Leadership Program.

As part of its B2B solutions targeted at a company, the digital strategy for giving the courses also gave the flexibility to cater to a specific cohort, he continued, as well as to provide high-quality, readily available modules as part of the Leadership School.

Ronnie Screwvala, Co-founder of UpGrad, said, “There is a Re-Skilling Revolution taking place around the world, and the crying need for more leaders & entrepreneurs at companies, start-ups, and even in public service has never been more critical and urgent. Harappa brings unique insights into what it takes to hone your management skills with the right mix of domain expertise coupled with the soft skills needed to lead from the front and therefore, we are doubling down and investing to bring these courses at affordable prices and right duration of courses, to connect with working professionals around the world.”

Pramath Raj Sinha, Co-founder of Harappa Education, said, “Never before has the world needed ever-increasing leadership capacity across sectors and industries. All ‘future of work’ research highlights the growing demand for leadership skills over technical skills. Harappa was built with the mission to teach leadership skills in an affordable, engaging, high-quality, and high-impact manner on a global scale. We are excited about putting our money where our mouth is – taking a mission mode approach to solving the leadership skills gap across the world.”

In 2018, Pramath Raj Sinha and Shreyasi Singh co-founded Harappa Education. The platform provided self-paced courses to address issues with inadequate leadership and poor employability.

In July 2022, upGrad announced plans to purchase Harappa Education for $38 million. Bodhi Tree Systems and other Harapaa Education shareholders joined UpGrad’s cap table as part of the deal.

Moreover, UpGrad revealed in August 2022 that it has raised an additional $210 million from new and returning investors as well as ETS Global, Bodhi Tree, Kaizen Management Advisors, family offices of Bharti Airtel, Narotam Sekhsaria, and Lakshmi Mittal’s Artian Investments.
