Red Hat has announced that Telefónica Spain has adopted Red Hat OpenShift as its standard platform for its IT workloads and cloud-native network functions (CNF). As part of this standardization, Telefónica is also integrating Red Hat OpenStack Services on OpenShift to modernize its virtualized infrastructure within a unified foundation. This strategic move allows Telefónica to streamline management across different environments, allowing both virtual machines (VMs) and cloud-native applications to run in parallel, while maintaining architectural agility to rapidly scale 5G and edge services.

Greater innovation with Red Hat OpenShift

In this way, Red Hat OpenShift becomes a key element in reducing the complexity of managing diverse network and IT operations and helping to respond more quickly to market needs. Red Hat OpenShift supports applications designed for the latest IT and networking technologies and uses cloud-native methodologies for system- and network-level automation. As part of Telefónica’s phased adoption strategy, all new workloads will be deployed on Red Hat OpenShift. In this way, you achieve greater flexibility, efficiency and resilience, while maintaining performance for powerful new 5G applications and services. With this hybrid architecture in place, Telefónica has the portability to scale workloads in any environment, including Azure, AWS and Google Cloud.

A very high percentage of the customer management processes for Telefónica’s residential segment are currently in production on Red Hat OpenShift. Scaling capacity used to take weeks, but now it can be done in seconds. In general, Telefónica has Reduced application deployment time with Red Hat OpenShift, going from eight hours to just 90 minutessignificantly reducing the scope of incidents and service degradation.

Managing a common platform helps reduce costs and minimizes the specialized training required for Telefónica staff. It also eliminates silos and improves collaboration between teams, speeding problem solving and innovation. With Red Hat OpenShift, Telefónica centralizes updates, event logging and security monitoring, while end users benefit from more reliable network performance and faster launch of services.
