As more employees turn to Claude Cowork, Claude Code, and OpenClaw to create agents on their managed devices, Commvault extends resiliency capabilities to these AI tools and gives security teams greater visibility into shadow AI. With the recent announcement, the company announces that it allows IT and security teams to detect, protect and recover agent configurations and other AI data that employees run on their computers managed with Windows or MacOS. These are the tools Claude Cowork from Anthropic, Claude Code from Anthropic and OpenClaw.
For workers and IT managers, this can be a revolutionary advance. When a laptop is lost, damaged, replaced, or otherwise disrupted, organizations and employees—developers, marketers, and others—can lose not only files, but also agent configurations, accumulated AI context, and workflows they depend on to complete critical projects. This could be a devastating blow to employees and a loss of productivity for organizations.
Protect agent configurations on premises
With this new functionality, IT teams can identify instances of certain agent-based AI tools installed on managed devices, protect locally stored agent configurations, and recover that protected information if an outage occurs. This also gives employees a way to recover their valuable work, including AI-generated content, prompt libraries, personalized instructions, and tool-specific context.
The feature is also useful for security teams. Provides managers with a centralized view of supported AI tools installed on employees’ managed devices. If AI tools are installed outside of approved IT processes, teams can see where the tool is present and investigate. This provides organizations with greater visibility into potential shadow AI.
New visibility, protection and recovery challenges
This functionality comes at the right time. According to IBM, 80% of office workers surveyed say they use AI in their jobs, while only 22% rely exclusively on AI tools provided by their companies. The result is an increasing mix of authorized use of AI and “shadow AI,” posing new visibility, protection and recovery challenges for IT and security teams.
The functionality is part of AgentRecover, Commvault’s solution for recoverability of enterprise AI environments.
“Most organizations don’t know what AI agents are running on their employees’ computers, much less how to recover the work on them,” said Pranay Ahlawat, Chief Technology and AI Officer at Commvault. “We give IT and security teams visibility into where these AI tools are installed, as well as a recovery path for the context that employees have created in them.”
Great compatibility with AI tools
OpenAI’s ChatGPT desktop app discovery feature is now available. Detection, protection and recovery of supported local data associated with Claude Cowork, Claude Code and OpenClaw will be generally available in the coming months. Customers can access these features through Commvault’s current endpoint protection offerings without the need for a separate SKU or additional purchase. Support for more AI tools is planned to be added in future versions.
This offering is part of AgentRecover, Commvault’s solution for recoverability of enterprise AI environments – from AI tools and their data and configurations to the connected systems on which they depend.
