Cloudflare has announced Basin, its data technology platform that offers developers and businesses a simpler, more affordable way to build applications based on their own data. Built on Apache Iceberg and Cloudflare R2, Basin gives teams an open, serverless way to collect, store, classify, and query analytics data through the tools they already use.

Over the years, sophisticated data analysis has required a dedicated data engineering team and the corresponding budget. To manage a modern data stack, you typically have to spin up dedicated servers with capacity exceeding demand, join independent systems to collect and analyze data, and pay fees each time data is transferred between clouds. The infrastructure has been so expensive to build and maintain that the teams that could do it well were precisely the ones that could already afford it.

An open and accessible platform for everyone

Basin changes all that. Data is stored in an open, industry-standard format that any compatible tool can read directly – no copying, no conversion, and no vendor lock-in. The collection, organization, and analysis run on the Cloudflare network on-demand, with no dedicated servers to manage and no fees for transferring data back and forth.

“Developers shouldn’t have to become data infrastructure operators just to answer questions about their own data,” said Dane Knecht, CTO at Cloudflare. “With Cloudflare Basin, we’re bringing the same serverless model that developers have come to expect from Cloudflare to the analytics space. No clusters to manage, no unnecessary data transfers, and open standards that allow customers to maintain control over their data.”

With Basin, customers can:

  • Own your data, not just access it: Data is stored in Apache Iceberg, an open, industry-standard format, so teams can analyze it with any supported tool and are never limited to a single vendor.
  • Avoid server configuration: Basin runs on Cloudflare’s global network, allowing developers to collect, store, and query data in seconds without having to provision or manage infrastructure.
  • Eliminate data transfer fees: Viewing data using tools from different clouds, platforms or regions does not incur transfer fees.

“We’ve moved our entire company’s data flow to Basin Pipelines, Catalog and SQL,” says Dax Raad, co-founder of Anomaly, creators of the popular open source AI scheduling agent OpenCode. “We’ve replaced a complex AWS S3 and Athena setup with a cleaner, serverless architecture that reliably manages all of our event data.”

Cloudflare Basin brings the same serverless model developers have come to expect from Cloudflare into analytics.

“Bobsled is a data product platform that uses the world’s most advanced data teams to create and distribute AI-ready data to partners, suppliers and customers,” said Julien Grobbelaar, Platform Manager at Bobsled. “Basin allows us to create data products that can be accessed from any region of the leading data and AI platforms, all with production-grade reliability and at a greatly reduced cost thanks to no exit fees.”
