If you take a laptop, camera, phone or other electronic gadgets to an exotic country, it’s worth thinking before throwing them into your backpack. High temperature, humidity, dust, dust, other power standards – all this can surprise even experienced travelers. In this article, we will tell you how to realistically prepare electronics for a trip to warm countries. It’s not only about surviving equipment, but also about your comfort and peace.
The climate makes a difference – what threatens electronics in warm countries?
During trips to exotic countries, it is not only about heat, although high temperature is already a sufficient challenge for a laptop. There is also moisture (sometimes very high), dust, sand, and sometimes even voltage differences in sockets. Electronic equipment is designed for work in controlled conditions, not in a tropical sauna. So if you plan to take your computer on a journey, it’s worth getting to know the restrictions.
Overheating protection
Laptops hate heat, and specifically their components, which can heat up to dangerous levels. The absolute base is ensuring proper ventilation devices. Do not put the laptop on the bed, towel, or even more on the preheated windowsill. If you plan to work on the beach – it’s better to let it go and look for a place in the shade. When the heat prevails outside, even a thin cooling pad can make a difference. And an important thing – if you feel that the fan begins to work like crazy – give the device a rest.
Invest in a good case
Transporting a laptop on travel is a separate story. Hand luggage can get hit well during transfers, tuk-tuk riding or boat cruises. It is worth investing in a good case or a cover with stiffening that will protect the equipment against upholstery, shocks and moisture. If you take more electronics – consider a backpack with a separate, well -padded laptop chamber. Your spine will also thank you for that.
Compatible chargers and plugins
The plugins do not look the same everywhere. And not everywhere the tension in the socket is stable. In tropical countries there are power outages, and voltage jumps can damage the charger or even the laptop itself. Before leaving, check what type of plugins applies in a given country and take the appropriate adapter. If you want to sleep peacefully – add a small power bank to your backpack with a laptop charging function or a fuse power strip.
Moisture – a quiet enemy of electronics
High humidity accelerates corrosion processes and can cause short circuits. You will meet her in coastal countries or where there is rainy season. Do not leave an open laptop near the window or air conditioner. It is worth considering special moisture absorbing bags (e.g. with silica gel), which can be thrown into a bag with electronics. They are not expensive and can save the situation. It may sound like an exaggeration, but only to the first short circuit.
Backup, backup and backup again
If you go to another country with a laptop (not necessarily exotic), there is a risk – theft, damage or loss of data. That is why it is worth having a backup of the most important files – on an external disk or in the cloud. Before you go on a journey, check what you actually write locally. The laptop can always be bought back, but the loss of valuable data is often a much more serious problem.
Watch out for work outdoors!
Sounds romantic – a laptop, a cafe with an ocean view, coconut water pita straight from the nut … Remember, however, that in full sun the computer can overheat. If you already have to work in such conditions – look for a shadow, invest in an anti -reflection filter and try not to leave your laptop unattended.
Install everything before leaving
Remember that in many places the world mobile internet is slow, expensive or even absent. Therefore, before leaving, make system updates, download the necessary offline files, install programs you need. In some places you will not be able to “quickly” download files, and if you find the Internet, download time can significantly differ from what you have got used to (-As) in Poland.
“Service”
You will need a few handy accessories from the trip to a warm country. It is not about what a set of tools, but a screen wipes, a keyboard brush (or electric blower), a microfiber cloth and maybe a small cleaning spray are things that can save the situation wherever dust and sand may appear.
Do you need a laptop at all on vacation?
This is a question that is worth asking yourself before packing your backpack. If the laptop only goes “just in case”, maybe it’s better to take a tablet with a keyboard or a good smartphone with the right applications? This is less stress, a lower risk of damage, and the luggage will become lighter. Of course, if you go to work – there is no way out. However, if the goal is to rest, then it may be worth giving yourself (and laptop) free.
