The Spanish Federation of Technology Centers (Fedit) has been called to participate in the analysis of the Science, Technology and Innovation Law project promoted by the Principality of Asturias. The inclusion of Technology Centers in this debate highlights their key role in applied research, which acts as an essential link between scientific development and the industrial sector.

These centers are fundamental for the transfer of technology and knowledge to companies, playing a vital role in strengthening the competitiveness and sustainability of the economy.

Applied research and the Science Law in Asturias

Unlike basic research, which focuses on generating new knowledge, applied research seeks to transfer these scientific advances to the business field, offering practical solutions to real problems. The Technology Centers, due to their ability to anticipate the productive and technological demands of the industrial sector, are specialists in connecting innovation with the needs of the market, thus facilitating more agile and efficient development.

Áureo Díaz-Carrasco, executive director of Fedit, who spoke before the Science, Business and Employment Commission of the General Board of the Principality, highlighted the importance of greater support for Technology Centers in the new Science Law. “It is crucial that these centers, which are already recognized at the state level, are automatically included in the registry of science and innovation agents in Asturias,” he noted. He also stressed that the recognition of its role in applied research reinforces not only the scientific ecosystem, but also directly promotes the business fabric and has a tangible impact on the lives of citizens.

This focus on applied research not only increases business competitiveness, but also accelerates the arrival of innovations to the market, benefiting all of society. Díaz-Carrasco added: “This Law should focus more on increasing the impact of scientific and innovation activities on companies and society, addressing not only the technological offer, but also the real demands of the sector.”
