Spain continues to mark the pace in digital connectivity, with important differences between fixed and mobile networks according to the latest report published by OOKLA, corresponding to the second semester of 2024. The data, obtained from millions of tests performed by users on the Speedtest platform, show a mixed panorama: while the optical fiber offers exceptional performance throughout the country, the 5G still has important improvement margins.

In relation to this, Movistar is consolidated as the most powerful operator in the Spanish mobile market. According to the report, he obtained Major Speed Score in the country, highlighting not only for its discharge speeds (85.19 Mbps on average) and ascent (13.27 Mbps), but also for the least latency among its competitors (52 ms). This superiority also extends to the 5G environment, where it registered a median discharge speed of 191.17 Mbps, notably above Orange and Yoigo.

In addition, the company obtained the best global result in 5G performance, surpassing its rivals both in speeds and latency (50 ms), which gives it a reference position for those who seek a quick and stable mobile experience.

Digi, Queen of Fiber in Spain

In the fixed connection segment, Digi is once again in the lead as the fastest supplier in the country. With medium discharge and upload speeds greater than 310 Mbps, this operator has managed to stand out especially as an experience for users who prioritize demanding services such as gaming or high resolution streaming.

The consistency in its performance is also a key factor: Digi not only reaches high figures, but also maintains a stable standard in different geographical areas, which reinforces its reputation as a solid and reliable alternative against large traditional telecos.

Outstanding regions: Madrid and La Rioja, at the forefront

At the regional level, the report indicates to the Community of Madrid as the most prominent in mobile connectivity, with a medium discharge speed that exceeds 80 Mbps. As for fixed network, the Rioja takes the lead with 272.40 Mbps of average discharge speed, consolidating itself as one of the best connected communities in the country.

These figures reflect an advanced connectivity panorama in certain urban centers and regions, although they also show the persistence of display between areas.

Vodafone and Orange, strong in specific experiences

While Movistar and Digi dominated in terms of speed, other operators stood out in specific user experience niches. Vodafone offered the best streaming experience in 5G networks, while Orange stood out in the field of mobile gaming, which demonstrates the fragmentation of the leadership according to the type of use that is valued.

Challenges and projection

Although the general results are positive, the report also highlights the need to continue investing in mobile infrastructure, especially in rural and less densely populated areas, where 5G coverage and latency are not yet reached optimal levels.

With a competitive market in full evolution – and important mergers in progress – the second semester of 2024 reflects a digitally active Spain, although with divergent paths between the fixed network, highly consolidated, and the mobile ecosystem, which still needs structural improvements to achieve its maximum potential.
