Are you thinking about buying an electric bike? Check what to look for so as not to overpay and really enjoy driving.

What to look for when buying an electric bike?

Electricity is definitely not a temporary fashion – it is a real alternative to the car, public transport or classic bike. This is an increasingly frequent selection of people who want to move faster, more convenient and … without excessive fatigue. But before you decide to spend several thousand zlotys, it is worth looking at a few specific matters. Contrary to appearances, an electric bike is not only a frame and a battery.

Bicycle type – not every “electrician” goes with everything

Let’s start from scratch. Do you want to commute to work after asphalt? Choose a city bike. Do you dream of weekend outlaps in the field? Look for something from the e-mtb category. There are also trekking models, gravelers and even folders, and everyone has its pros and cons. Error number one? Buying “because it was on promotion”, without thinking about what you actually need a bike for.

Battery – the heart of the whole system

The electric bike battery is of course one of the key elements. Its capacity (given in WH – watt hours) translates into real range. Standard is around 400-500 Wh, which allows you to drive from 40 to even 100 km – but it all depends on the terrain, cyclist’s weight and support mode.

Do not believe in “range of up to 120 km” if you live in mountainous terrain and weigh well over 90 kg well – this is not a car from the catalog. The larger the battery, the better – although also more expensive and harder for the total weight of the bike.

Engine – not only power counts

The engines are divided into two main types: in hub (back or front) and central (in crank). The latter are more expensive, but they offer better balancing, smoother support and better coping in more difficult terrain. If you are planning urban driving – the engine in the hub may be enough. For more serious routes – it’s definitely better to invest in a central drive. Power? Standard is 250 W – and that’s all it allows for legal navigating public roads. Greater power = greater fun, but also potential regulations.

Control and display – little things that make the difference

Some bikes have a simple, barely visible display. Others – a full -fledged screen with navigation, driving modes and statistics. In everyday use, an intuitive interface is a really useful thing. It is also good if the button to change the power steering is easily available, preferably somewhere at the left handle.

Brakes, cushioning and accessories

In the world of e-bikes, we often only look at the battery and engine, forgetting about … the rest of the bike. Meanwhile, poor disc brakes or a lack of a shock absorber can make driving more than a weak battery. At higher speeds and mass (because the electrician weighs), the hydraulic brakes are “must-have”. It is also worth paying attention to the derailleurs – the Shimano Alivio or Deore equipment is already a decent shelf.

The weight of an electric bike

Most electric bikes weigh from 20 to 28 kg. A lot, for equipment, which sometimes needs to be brought up the stairs or hung on the hook in the basement. If you don’t have an elevator and you often move a bike – look for a lighter model or a folder.

Price – it doesn’t always mean better

Prices of electricians can hurt. However, you can’t get trapped – more expensive does not always mean better for you. It is worth getting acquainted with what the market offers and confront this with real needs. However, you have to prepare for the fact that cheaper electric bikes (below PLN 4,000) often have poor range, weak engines and accessories from the bottom shelf. Realistic budget? From 5000 to 9000 PLN for sensible equipment with a guarantee of a well -known manufacturer and branded drive.

Service and availability of parts

If you buy a bike stationary from a local seller, it will definitely be easier to service the vehicle. The website operating at the store will know how to deal with specific defects when the warranty ends. Do you buy online? Check if a given brand is popular and whether local bicycle services know what to eat with. With normal bicycles, we do not think about electronics related failures. Here the matter looks a bit different and not everyone will take up repair. It is also worth checking the availability of spare parts.

An electric bike is a great thing – provided you buy consciously. Do not suggest only with price, appearance or marketing promises. Think about where and how you will drive, check the technical parameters and compare several models. And if you have the opportunity-test the e-bike before buying. And remember that once you change to an electrician, a return to a “classic” can be … surprisingly difficult …;)
