Google has a very long and checkered history with notebooks. Unfortunately, none of them achieved much success. However, this does not prevent the company from working on a new Pixelbook model.
Google may soon surprise us with an innovative project – a high-end Pixel laptop, codenamed “Snowy”. According to reports published by Android Headlines, the company is working intensively on this device, assigning a dedicated team to the project. If the information is confirmed, “Snowy” will be the second Pixel laptop. In 2019, Pixelbook Go debuted on the market, but it did not achieve much success.
Google aims high
Currently, reports indicate that the new Pixel laptop will have a design made of premium materials and top specifications, although hardware details have not been revealed yet. Google would like to compete with the best brands on the market, such as Apple Macbook Pro, Dell XPS, Microsoft Surface or Samsung Galaxy Chromebook. In this context, the giant’s pricing strategy will also be an interesting aspect, especially with regard to the planned Pixel Tablet 2. As will the specification of the notebook, which will probably be based on the ARM architecture. If Google wants to compete with universal notebooks, it must offer something more than Chrome OS.
Android instead of Chrome OS
Therefore, one of the most surprising pieces of information is the fact that the new laptop will run on Android, not Chrome OS, which has been offered on laptops so far. This decision may suggest Google’s long-term plan to phase out Chrome OS in favor of Android. While the processor architecture is almost certain, it is not yet clear whether it will be Google’s own chip (Tensor?) or a processor from other vendors such as Qualcomm. For comparison, Google’s previous laptop, the Pixelbook Go, ran Chrome OS and was powered by Intel processors. The new Pixel laptop promises to be an interesting proposition on the premium market, combining elegant design with advanced technologies. The only question is whether Android will be able to compete with macOS and Windows in terms of functionality.
