Gazany water from Sodastream is a hit of recent years, but is it really healthy? We check what science says, what are the benefits and threats, and who should be careful about it.

Sodastream saturator has permanently appeared in many kitchens, allowing you to quickly prepare drinks with bubbles, without carrying the welds or bottles from the store. Somewhere in the back of the head, however, the question may arise: is such water really healthy? Are gassing at home only benefits? Or maybe there is a hook somewhere? We check.

Gazany water – what exactly do we drink?

Sodastream water differs from the usual only one – the content of carbon dioxide, which creates characteristic bubbles. It is exactly the same gas that naturally occurs in the air and which we exhale. Sodastream cartridges use high -purity CO2 food, which meets the appropriate standards. There are no “secret ingredients”, preservatives or additives – unless of course you don’t pour in syrup. The carbonated water itself with the help of the device is safe and can be an alternative to supermarket drinks.

Health benefits – more than refreshment

Sparkled water from sodastream can have a positive effect on the body, especially when you drink it regularly instead of sweetened drinks. What a plus?

  • Better hydration – For many people, water with bubbles simply tastes better – and this means that they drink more.
  • Digesting support – Carbon dioxide can stimulate the secretion of stomach juices and support intestinal peristalsis.
  • Feeling of satiety – Bubbles mechanically “fill” the stomach, which can help in controlling appetite – although not everyone likes it.

Contraindications and exceptions

Sodastream water is not for everyone. If you suffer from reflux, stomach ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome or excessive bloating – better reach for the still version. Carbon dioxide can intensify symptoms, especially with frequent intake. Parents of young children should also approach the sparkling water with caution – bubbles can irritate mucous membranes, and infants are not recommended at all. Pregnancy women should also be careful.

Syrups? You have to be careful here.

Although ordinary water from Sodastream is a healthy option, the situation changes when we add flavored syrups to it. Some of them contain sugar, preservatives, dyes and artificial sweeteners, which – especially in larger quantities – can negatively affect our body. The situation is the same as in the case of sweetened drinks from the store. Natural additions are definitely better, such as lemon slices, mint, cucumber or a few raspberries. Then you keep the taste, but you avoid chemical ingredients or empty calories.

Sparkling water vs. teeth and bones

One of the more common myths is the belief that sparkling water destroys the enamel or rinses calcium from the bones. What are the facts?

Yes, carbonated water has a slightly acidic reaction, because CO2 creates carbon acid – but its concentration is very low. The erosion potential of such water is over 100 times smaller than in the case of cola or fruit drinks. Healthy enamel can easily handle it, especially if you drink sparkling water with meals. Caution can be exercised in people with very sensitive teeth, but there is no reason to panic. Similarly with bones – there are no tests that would confirm the negative effect of CO2 on the skeletal system.

Botters without BPA – what about this plastic?

Another important topic is the safety of the equipment itself – specifically Sodastream bottles. And here is good news: all new bottles are made of Tritan, i.e. BPA and BPS -free plastics, which were suspected of hormonal disorders. Tritan is durable, safe and much better than classic PETs. In addition, Sodastream eliminates the need to buy bottled water, and thus also reduces the risk of consuming microplastics.

A healthy choice if you do it with your head

Drinking water from Sodastream is safe and – in most cases, does not negatively affect our health. This is a great alternative to sweetened drinks, a good way for better hydration and a nice step towards ecology. You just have to remember a few rules: drink in moderation, avoid stomach problems, choose good accessories and replace bottles when their time comes.
