Here are the laptop brands that are the hardest to repair. The leader of this infamous list will surprise no one.

Laptops have taken over the PC market and today these machines are the most popular choice when it comes to personal computers. And we are not only talking about thin & light laptops valued for their mobility. Today, the notebook segment also includes gaming or video editing machines equipped with the most powerful components, equal in performance to traditional designs.

What’s more, because of how powerful today’s computers are, modern machines are devices that will last for many years. Therefore, when we buy them, it is worth paying attention not only to their parameters, but also to whether we will be able to easily service them in the future so that they will serve us for as long as possible. Unfortunately, in this area, not all brands are equal and some devices are definitely worth being careful with.

These are the worst laptop brands to repair

In the United States, a group known as the “US Public Interest Research Group” has just published a report called “Failing the Fix,” which, based on available data, describes the most popular consumer electronics brands – laptops and smartphones – and catalogs them in terms of how easy it is to repair their devices.

The report takes into account such elements as the ease of disassembly of the device, the presence of documentation, the availability of parts and their cost. All categories were appropriately scored and the final score was calculated on this basis. If you are curious, the final results for individual brands look like this:

In this case, Apple devices have lost the most in how easy it is to take them apart. I’m not only talking about glued-in batteries, but also about the fact that in these computers the user himself can no longer replace even a single component. Besides, we’ve already written more than once about what happens when a Macbook breaks down.

The second product category that also did not fare well in the tests are Chromebooks. Here, due to the low price of the devices themselves, the biggest problem was the availability of spare parts. However, it must be remembered that the lower price of the devices results from something. Chromebooks, however, have another problem, namely – their functioning depends on Google support, which is a problem for schools, as I wrote here.

Of course – everyone may have a different approach to computers and someone may not mind that their repair is difficult, unprofitable, or in some cases – impossible. Unfortunately, the report does not have good news for the future. If we compare the ratings received by individual manufacturers in relation to the previous year, we will see that almost all (ironically – except for Apple) received worse results in this year’s test.

This means that instead of improvements that could at least make these computers last longer (and therefore be less of a burden on the environment), manufacturers are going in the exact opposite direction, making their equipment harder to repair. It’s worth remembering this when choosing equipment for yourself in the store.
