Indra and the Barcelona Supercomputing Center-Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) have established a collaboration to promote research and development in dual-use technologies, with the aim of strengthening technological sovereignty both in Spain and in Europe.
The agreement was signed by Marc Murtra, president of Indra, and Mateo Valero, director of the BSC, at the headquarters of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center.
Both organizations have expressed interest in working together to develop solutions and knowledge in areas such as supercomputing, artificial intelligence and quantum technologies. These technologies have applications in both civil and defense fields, and are especially relevant to the NGWS/FCAS program, a joint initiative of Germany, Spain and France to develop the defense air system of the future.
Indra and BSC-CNS: technological sovereignty in Spain and Europe
The protocol signed between Indra and BSC will facilitate the exchange of scientific-technical knowledge, the training and development of personnel, and the search for synergies and collaborations in other strategic dual technology programs. In addition, it will contribute to the creation of new supercomputing, software and hardware infrastructures, providing the processing capacity necessary to address increasingly complex scientific and technological challenges.
The sum of all the scientific-technical capabilities available is essential to compete globally and reinforce Spanish and European technological sovereignty
Marc Murtra, president of Indra, stated that “the collaboration of the industrial and scientific ecosystem will allow us to lead the large technological programs that are being launched in Europe. The joint application of the capabilities of the BSC and Indra will contribute significantly to the development of dual-use technologies necessary to ensure the well-being of our society. This alliance represents an important step forward towards strategic autonomy, reinforcing the ability to anticipate the future.”
For Mateo Valero, director of the BSC, “conceptual designs and developments of engineering systems are increasingly complex and require the use of appropriate digital tools and extraordinary computing power. The primary objective of this agreement is to establish a ‘system of systems’ approach within the innovation ecosystem, which contributes to improving the technological sovereignty of the future Spanish and European technological and industrial base.”
The signed agreement establishes a continuous communication channel and establishes the bases so that BSC and Indra can work together. The possible areas of collaboration are very broad and of enormous technological significance, covering, for example, the simulation, modeling and emulation of complex systems in virtual environments, the research and development of AI applications, hardware architectures, edge computing, orchestration systems in high-performance and distributed environments or quantum computing.
