The International SME Day, which is celebrated every June 27, is a date that invites you to reflect on the real impact of small and medium enterprises on the country’s economic engine. They represent 99.8% of the business fabric in Spain and generate more than 62% of employment, according to Funcas. But beyond the percentages, their survival and growth are linked to their ability to adapt to a digital environment that does not expect.
In that context, artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing have become strategic allies for thousands of SMEs. It is not just technology: it is competitiveness, efficiency and, above all, to keep alive the pulse of innovation. From Amazon Web Services (AWS), they ensure that small businesses are already obtaining tangible benefits. In fact, a study by Strand Partners reveals that more than 1.6 million organizations in Spain use AI, increasing their income by 34%.
The scalability offered by the cloud allows small businesses to test and display AI solutions agilely. “Thanks to AWS infrastructure and services such as Amazon Bedrock and Amazon transcribe, we have been able to develop personal digital assistants and AI agents that automate complex relationship processes with the client,” says José Luis Marín, director of digitalization, data and Madisonmk. With more than 2,200 employees, this Spanish company has integrated generative to improve customer and citizen service.
The cloud and AWS AI, keys in the digital transformation of thousands of small businesses in Spain
In AWS, the approach is based on three pillars: give freedom to invent, maximize the value and offer an AI in which it can be trusted. The freedom to experiment is reflected on platforms such as Amazon Q or Amazon Lex, which facilitate the development of solutions without the need for expensive infrastructure.
More value, less operational costs
Access to advanced tools is no longer a luxury reserved for large corporations. Habitium, distributor of construction materials, has automated its product catalog via Amazon Bedrock, achieving a drastic reduction of errors and returns. “The return rate for incorrect information has gone from 15% to less than 1%, and the losses have been reduced from 4% to just 1%. The support team has also been optimized, from 10 people to only 3,” explains Philipp Vujic, CTO of Habitium.
These results show how AI not only promotes income, but also improves profitability by reducing costs and releasing talent for strategic tasks.
Trust is another axes on which the use of AI is built. In sectors such as identity verification, security is not optional. Facephi, a Spanish company specialized in anti -fraud technology and KYC, uses AWS global services to comply with local regulations without giving up agility. “AWS’s global infrastructure has been fundamental for our international expansion, allowing us to offer identity verification services with minimal latency and high regulatory compliance,” says Javier Mira, CEO of Facephi.
Global infrastructure, local impact
From AWS they emphasize that their global presence, with 37 regions and 117 availability zones, including Aragon, allows SMEs to climb without initial investment and adapt in real time to market needs. The elasticity of the cloud allows to manage demand peaks, enter new markets and meet specific regulations in different countries, something especially critical for companies with international ambitions.
A more competitive future thanks to the cloud
In a scenario where every second account, the latest technological tools are a real competitiveness lever for SMEs. The challenge is no longer whether to adopt artificial intelligence, but how to do it strategically and safely. And there, platforms like AWS are playing a key role.
