The global threat of ransomware remains at maximum levels: half of the organizations of all sizes, regions and sectors have been victims of this attack in the last year.
To deepen this, from Fortinet they have published their Global Ransomware 2023 report, where it is examined how this security gap has affected organizations in the last year.
«The results show the urgency so that organizations go from simple detection to a real -time response. However, this is only part of the solution, since organizations cited that the main challenges in attack prevention were related to their staff and processes, ”explains John Maddison, EVP products and CMO in Fortinet.
Disconnection between ransomware prevention and prevention grows
The report highlights a great disconnection between the preparation of organizations in terms of cybersecurity and their real ability to stop ransomware attacks. Although 78% of the organizations surveyed claimed to be very or extremely prepared to mitigate an attack, the survey revealed that 50% of them had suffered an attack in the last year.
In addition, the report identifies that four of the five greatest challenges to stop this malware were related to people or processes.
More organizations pay the rescue
According to the survey, although most organizations (72%) detect an incident in a matter of hours or even minutes, there is still a high percentage of organizations that pay bailouts: almost three quarters of the respondents made some type of payment.
78% of organizations felt prepared against ransomware attacks
When comparing the different sectors, it was discovered that companies in the industrial sector were the most likely to make the payment, and also those that received higher bailouts. Specifically, a quarter of attacks on organizations in the industrial sector received a rescue of one million dollars or more.
Finally, although 88% of the organizations surveyed claimed to have cybersecurity insurance, almost 40% did not receive the expected coverage and, in some cases, did not receive any coverage due to the exceptions of the insurer.
Other report data
- Cybersecurity budgets will increase despite economic uncertainty: Concern for ransomware remains high, in fact 91% of organizations hope to increase their security budgets next year, despite the difficult world economic environment
- Improvement of protection against ransomware through a platform approach: The report highlights the importance of taking advantage of a unified and platform approach to defend against ransomware. This approach is endorsed by the results of the report that show that organizations that, in the last year, applied a strategy based on non -integrated specific products were more likely to be victims of an attack, while those that had consolidated with a lower number of platforms were less exposed
