Razer once again surprises with its ingenuity – and offers us a gadget that for many may turn out to be a real revolution in the everyday use of electronics. However, we will have to pay dearly for it – which may effectively discourage many potential interested parties…
Razer can often surprise and… this time it also succeeded. The company has released a laptop case 16 that both protects the computer and acts as a MagSafe mobile charging station for iPhone and AirPods. This is an interesting example of how on-the-go accessories are starting to combine protection, ergonomics and power in one product.
The new Razer Laptop Sleeve 16″ with Wireless Charging for Devices has an integrated wireless charger in the flap with two MagSafe-compatible zones, so you can put your phone and headphones on the case exactly like on a classic charging stand.
In practice, these are two fields: one with a power of 15 W for the iPhone and the other 5 W for AirPods, so the accessory is not designed to charge two iPhones at the same time. Power is supplied via USB-C (e.g. from a 30 W+ power supply or from a Mac), and the magnets also act as a clasp when the case is closed.
15 W is today a reasonable standard for efficient wireless charging, but it is also worth remembering that this is not the maximum for the latest iPhones. Newer models can reach up to 25 W with appropriate chargers, so the Razer case is primarily a solution for maintaining the battery while running, and not for the fastest possible charging.
Qi2 is an open standard that adopts the idea of magnetic positioning known from MagSafe and typically offers 15 W, which explains why many accessories target this level.
Protecting your laptop remains a priority
Razer does not treat charging as a gadget added to the case, but integrates it into the design of the flap, and the rest is to remain a full-fledged case for 16-inch laptops. Inside there is a soft lining that protects against scratches, additional corner reinforcements, and on the outside there is black polyester resistant to wear and rain.
Razer also announces a padded microfiber interior and the company’s signature finish.
If we often work on the run, such an accessory can actually reduce the number of things in the bag: fewer cables, fewer chargers, fewer things that we can potentially forget about when going to a meeting. However, as is often the case with Razer: we will have to pay dearly for it. In the official store, the accessory is priced at $130 (approximately PLN 465), which… considering that we are actually talking about a computer case, may prove to be a prohibitive price for many people. Without a doubt, it is an accessory that is also a practical gadget, so I won’t be surprised if it finds a group of fans.
