Zebra Technologies Corporation has announced its intention to acquire Photoneo, a leading developer and manufacturer of 3D machine vision solutions. This strategic acquisition will allow Zebra to strengthen its position in one of the fastest growing markets and offer advanced solutions to its customers.
The integration of Photoneo’s 3D machine vision solutions with Zebra’s advanced sensors, software and artificial intelligence (AI)-based image processing capabilities will provide customers with a unique offering. This combination will address a wide variety of use cases, including high-value applications such as bin picking, depalletizing, digital twin creation and object inspection in sectors such as automotive manufacturing and logistics.
Photoneo’s smart sensors are especially valuable for vision-guided robotics (VGR) and have been certified to work with many leading robot manufacturers. These sensors are ideal for robotic arm applications in container picking and other industrial uses. Photoneo’s parallel structured light technology offers a faster, more accurate and more robust solution for complex 3D applications, combining high-quality hardware and software tools.
“This operation meets the needs of our customers around the world to maximize the potential of machine vision in their operations. Leveraging our expertise in autonomous data capture, inspection software, and AI and deep learning capabilities, this acquisition expands our offering of 3D sensors and 3D machine vision software. “We are excited to welcome the Photoneo team to the Zebra family,” said Bill Burns, CEO of Zebra Technologies.
Zebra Technologies acquires Photoneo
Zebra has made several strategic investments in the machine vision market in recent years. In June 2022, it acquired Matrox Imaging to expand its offering of fixed industrial scanners and machine vision sensors. This acquisition enhanced Zebra’s position as a leading provider of machine vision hardware and a broad range of software development libraries and applications, unified in the Zebra Aurora software suite. By 2024, Zebra and Photoneo had already established an OEM relationship focused on Photoneo cameras, helping to expand Zebra’s 3D solutions offering.
This acquisition opens the door to new high-value use cases for the automotive manufacturing and logistics sectors, among other key markets.
Jan Zizka, co-founder and CEO of Photoneo Brightpick Group, expressed his excitement about the acquisition: “Zebra Technologies will provide an ideal environment for Photoneo to continue investing in innovation. By combining our innovative 3D sensors with Zebra’s global reach and 3D software, customers will be able to better leverage the benefits of machine vision solutions through new use cases.”
This acquisition reinforces Zebra’s profitable growth strategy and enhances its machine vision solutions offering. Zebra expects to finance the purchase price with cash on hand. The transaction is subject to closing conditions and is expected to be effective in the first quarter of 2025. Financial terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed.
