Synology has released ActiveProtect Manager 2.0 (APM 2.0), the latest software update for its ActiveProtect data protection devices. This release expands cross-platform support, adds cross-platform recovery, and strengthens security, with future updates introducing AI-powered threat mitigation capabilities.

Greater cross-platform compatibility
ActiveProtect Manager 2.0 extends protection to Amazon EC2, Azure VM, Proxmox VE, Nutanix AHV, and Google Workspace. Cross-platform recovery enables you to backup and restore workloads across different environments, facilitating both disaster recovery and seamless workload migration.
Backup destinations have also been expanded. ActiveProtect Vault is now supported on a wider range of Synology NAS devices, while Azure Blob Storage joins the list of supported destinations for copy and tiering storage. Backups stored in Amazon S3 Storage or Azure Blob Storage can be restored directly to Amazon EC2 or Azure VM as part of a cloud disaster recovery (Cloud DR) strategy, without needing to go through on-premises hardware, significantly reducing recovery times.
Proactive resilience powered by AI
ActiveProtect Manager 2.0 adds volume-level software storage encryption to protect data at rest. Backups and configurations of Synology systems remain inaccessible if drives are stolen or hardware is lost.
The next update, APM 2.1, will incorporate AI/ML anomaly detection. This feature will analyze each version of your backups to identify anomalous patterns, such as modification rate changes, file modifications, mass deletions, and entropy variations. Suspicious backups will be moved to quarantine so administrators can investigate them, limiting the risk of backup contamination. The model will learn from the results of these investigations to improve its accuracy and reduce false positives.
Next update, ActiveProtect Manager 2.1, will add AI/ML anomaly detection
Synology ActiveProtect Manager 2.1 will also scan backups for malware before restoring them using built-in third-party antivirus software such as Microsoft Defender, Bitdefender, and ESET. If malware is detected in the most recent backup, Auto Fallback will automatically restore the latest clean version. ActiveProtect Manager 2.0 is available for all DP Series devices at no additional cost.
