The AI revolution has ceased to be a promise and has become a tangible reality in the Spanish insurance sector. What just a few years ago was perceived as an incipient trend is today an essential piece in the digital transformation of companies. Insurers have understood that the intelligent use of data and advanced automation are the basis for offering a more agile, personalized and efficient service.

According to the X Thermometer of Artificial Intelligence and Data in the insurance sector, prepared by ICEA in collaboration with Minsait (Indra Group), eight out of ten entities in Spain have already implemented artificial intelligence projects, a figure that reaches 90% if those that are in the development phase are included. This level of adoption shows a profound change in the mentality of the sector, which has gone from experimentation to technological consolidation.

A more predictive and customer-focused sector

The study, which represents 76.5% of the market, shows that AI is not limited to a specific area, but is transforming the entire value chain. From risk assessment to customer service, artificial intelligence allows insurers to anticipate user needs, detect potential fraud and optimize decision-making.

Furthermore, 74% of companies that are already developing projects based on this technology have a specific plan to adapt to the AI Act, the new European regulations that regulate the responsible use of artificial intelligence. This shows that digitalization in the Spanish insurance sector is not only advancing rapidly, but that it is doing so with a solid ethical and governance approach.

“Spanish insurers are moving towards a model in which data and artificial intelligence are placed at the center of decision-making. This allows them to gain agility, better anticipate customer needs and optimize internal processes. It is a profound change, artificial intelligence is no longer a technological project, but a new way of managing the business,” explains Óscar Fernández, research technician at ICEA.

The emergence of agentic AI, a leap towards intelligent autonomy

One of the most notable aspects of the report is the growing presence of agentic AI, an evolution that marks a before and after in process automation. 46.4% of entities that work with artificial intelligence already use intelligent agents in real environments, while 28.6% are exploring its applicability through pilots.

These agents are systems capable of learning, defining strategies and executing tasks autonomously, following previously established business objectives. It is a proactive artificial intelligence model, which not only responds to human orders, but acts in an anticipatory and collaborative way.

“Until now, artificial intelligence was reactive, it responded to what we asked of it. With AI agents we go one step further, they are proactive. We tell them the objectives and they can work to achieve them autonomously, accompanying the processes and assuming tasks where humans cannot reach. They do not replace, but rather expand, human talent and intelligence,” highlights Andrés Duque, head of AI in Minsait Financial Services.

Collaborative and sustainable ecosystems

The advancement of agentic AI is giving rise to a new type of organization, where people and intelligent systems cooperate in interconnected environments. “At Minsait we are promoting ecosystems of agents that collaborate with each other and with people, generating more dynamic, efficient and sustainable organizations,” Duque added. “The true value of this technology is in its ability to free up time and human potential, reinforcing the link between innovation, purpose and productivity.”

The impact of this trend goes beyond efficiency. The collaboration between intelligent agents and professionals in the sector opens the door to new business models, personalized products and preventive services, based on real-time data analysis.

Spain, at the European forefront in insurance artificial intelligence

With these advances, the Spanish insurance sector is positioned among the most innovative in Europe in the adoption of artificial intelligence. The combination of responsible technology, strategic vision and customer-centric approach is defining a new stage, where artificial intelligence not only drives productivity, but also reinforces competitiveness and consumer confidence.

Far from being an auxiliary tool, artificial intelligence has become an essential partner for insurers. Its role as a driver of transformation is reconfiguring the way companies operate, innovate and relate to their customers. Spain is not only moving towards a more digital insurance model, but also towards a future in which collaboration between humans and machines will set the standard for business success.
