At present, a third of consumers do not make backups regularly, and 4% do not even know what they consist of. These figures, of a recent study by Acronis, reflect a lack of culture on data preservation, which leaves many people exposed to irreversible losses of information due to technical failures, cyber attacks or human errors.

On the occasion of World Backup Day, which is celebrated on March 31, from Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH recalls the importance of implementing effective support strategies, since, despite the growing value of digital information, awareness of its protection remains low.

And, the use of cloud storage has grown in recent years as a backup solution for photos, documents and other digital files. However, experts warn that trusting exclusively in this method can be risky. Eun-Kyung Hong, senior in product marketing management in the Division of Storage Products of Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH, says: «Consumers need to take control of their digital life. Our smartphones store photos, videos, contacts and passwords, but depending solely on the cloud is not the best option ».

To guarantee data safety, specialists recommend a multiple backup strategy, combining cloud storage with physical solutions such as external hard drives. “The recommendation,” adds Hong, “is to make periodic backups using different methods, such as a combination of cloud services and external storage devices.”

Backup backup copies

Among the solutions available in the market, Toshiba has developed devices designed to simplify the task of backing copies. One of its most prominent products is the Canvio Flex portable hard drive, which allows users to support their data directly from their smartphone without the need for a computer. This device is compatible with the main operating systems and facilitates access and transfer of information between different platforms.

The ease of use of these devices is key to fostering the adoption of backup habits. Without an accessible and effective solution, many users continue to postpone the task of protecting their data, exposing themselves to unnecessary risks.

The risk of losing valuable data

Incidents related to data loss are more common than it is believed. From faults on hard drives to ransomware attacks, any failure can cause the disappearance of crucial information. To avoid these scenarios, experts recommend following rule 3-2-1: have at least three copies of important files, stored in two different devices and one of them outside the main storage site.

World Backup Day is a reminder that data security is an individual and collective responsibility. The growing digitalization of everyday life makes information protection more crucial than ever. With accessible solutions and appropriate strategies, avoiding data loss is a simple task that can avoid great problems in the future.
