Public Wi-Fi networks are common in places like coffee shops, airports and when travelling, whether for work or vacation. While they are convenient for staying connected, it is crucial to ensure the protection of personal data when using them. Kaspersky experts stress the importance of implementing specific security measures to browse with peace of mind.

While public Wi-Fi networks make it easy to connect on the move, it’s vital to be aware of the associated risks. Cybercriminals can create fake networks or compromise existing ones, using names similar to legitimate ones to trick users into accessing their personal information, such as passwords, banking details and emails.

“While VPNs are considered to be solutions for occasional occasions, they can also be a cybersecurity measure for everyday use. By keeping a VPN activated, users improve their security and ensure continuous privacy protection, strengthening their defence against the risks of the digital space,” says Anna Larkina, web content analysis expert at Kaspersky.

Protecting public Wi-Fi networks in summer

To protect yourself effectively, Kaspersky recommends the following precautions:

  1. Limited use of public Wi-Fi networks: Connect to these networks only when absolutely necessary, due to their vulnerabilities.
  2. Network Check: Always confirm with the establishment’s staff that the Wi-Fi network is authentic to avoid fraudulent connections.
  3. Beware of login pages: Be wary if you are asked to log in through external platforms, such as social networks, as this may be a phishing attempt.
  4. Avoid sensitive transactions: Do not conduct financial transactions or access sites that require login information while connected to a public Wi-Fi network to reduce the risk of data interception.
  5. Using a VPN: A VPN significantly improves privacy and security on public Wi-Fi networks by encrypting data and protecting online activities from unauthorized access, without affecting Internet speed.

Adopting these tips and using a reliable VPN ensures that browsing on public Wi-Fi networks is safe. In addition to encrypting data, some comprehensive security solutions offer protection against risks such as phishing and DNS spoofing, which redirects users to malicious sites.
