The company has announced the development of Commvault Cloud Unified Data Vault, a cloud-native service that extends trusted protection and resiliency capabilities for storing data written with the S3 protocol. This solution enables you to integrate S3-based application and AI data storage into a unified, policy-based protection framework, achieving enterprise-grade resiliency for developers of all types.
By providing a secure, S3-compliant, Commvault-managed endpoint, Unified Data Vault enables organizations to apply immutable, policy-based protection to data storage for modern, custom workloads, including emerging AI workloads, without needing to install agents or create new data management silos. This approach strengthens the efficiency and governance of data storage in distributed cloud environments.
S3 Compatible Backups
Many developers use S3 as the default option for exporting backups and managing data storage, from databases like CockroachDB and Greenplum to services like Docusign and monday.com. However, these backups often reside in fragmented buckets, making consistent data storage lifecycle management difficult and creating hidden compliance risks and recovery delays.
Unified Data Vault closes that gap by offering teams a simple way to move S3-enabled backups directly to an isolated, Commvault-managed data storage environment, where information automatically inherits encryption, deduplication, immutability, and policy-based governance. This centralized model optimizes the protection of business-critical data storage.
“S3 fundamentally changed the way data storage was managed. Unified Data Vault changes the way that data is protected,” said Pranay Ahlawat, director of technology and artificial intelligence at Commvault. “For the first time, developers and data teams can write directly to a Commvault-managed S3 endpoint and instantly gain encryption, immutability and policy control, all without agents or added complexity. This is enterprise-grade cloud protection designed specifically for modern data storage.”
Main advantages for customers
• Agentless simplicity: Enables applications, databases, and workflows to write directly to a Commvault-managed S3 endpoint, simplifying data storage management without the need for custom scripts or agents.
• Automated business protection: provides immutability, encryption, deduplication, and retention controls at the time backups are written, strengthening the security of data storage from its source.
• Developer-ready programmability: integrates with native S3 workflows and APIs for frictionless DevOps automation in cloud data warehouse environments.
• Centralized policy governance: Applies consistent protection and compliance policies set by users across clouds, regions, and workloads, ensuring unified control of data storage.

“For many developers, S3 is the go-to repository for data storage for the most popular databases and AI applications. The need to bring a strong resilience posture to these large volumes of data storage is paramount,” said Archana Venkatraman, senior research director at IDC. “Unified Data Vault extends centralized automation, immutability, and physical separation protection in a way that is accessible to developers, but gives SecOps and IT teams peace of mind that end-to-end data storage resiliency is guaranteed.”
Availability
Commvault Cloud Unified Data Vault is available through early access for some customers and is scheduled for general availability in Spring 2026.
The new service will also be available through Commvault’s partner ecosystem, enabling managed service providers, resellers and cloud service partners to extend Commvault Cloud to new S3-native workloads and new data storage scenarios. Partners thus obtain new opportunities to offer differentiated cyber resilience with high added value.
