“HPE Discover 2024” has returned to Barcelona for another year, with its European edition, attracting more than 4,500 people, including clients, analysts and specialized journalists. Discover has served as a primary stage for the power of Artificial Intelligence, as well as HPE’s strong commitment to key areas such as high-performance computing, advanced networking and hybrid cloud.
As part of its big event, the company has presented HPE VM Essentials, an evolution of its virtual machine project previously announced at Discover in Las Vegas. This new solution incorporates technology from Morpheus, the company’s most recent acquisition, and promises to simplify the management of virtualized environments.
Antonio Neri, CEO of HPE, highlighted, in a meeting with the specialized press attended by Byte TI, the importance of this solution in the context of the recent changes in VMware licenses after its acquisition by Broadcom. “I spend more than 50% of my time talking to customers and partners, and what they tell me is that the virtualization landscape is changing due to changes in contracts and licensing terms. Many clients tell me that their costs have increased three to five times.
In this scenario, HPE VM Essentials is presented as an attractive alternative, allowing companies to manage their virtualized workloads with greater flexibility and efficiency. Neri stressed that, while the telephone took 75 years to reach 50 million users and mobile phones 12 years, generative AI achieved it in less than a year. «This is not just rapid growth, it is a major paradigm shift, a profound transformation like we have never seen before. “AI is not only improving technology, it is enabling new interaction capabilities, redefining what is possible in our lives.”
Additionally, Neri addressed the topic of “responsible” AI, a concept that HPE is actively promoting. This includes aspects such as privacy, sustainable and human-centered technological development. “AI is transforming every sector, every line of business, and creating opportunities that we couldn’t even imagine 18 months ago.”
HPE Discover: news in the HPE GreenLake cloud platform
In addition, the company has used the event to announce significant advances in its HPE GreenLake cloud platform, designed to simplify the management of hybrid and complex IT environments, allowing companies to increase their agility and innovation.
- HPE VM Essentials (VME): This new solution offers a unified experience for managing virtual machines (VMs), providing flexibility to handle virtualized workloads in hybrid environments. HPE VM Essentials integrates existing virtualized workloads with the new HPE VME hypervisor, supporting major storage protocols, load distribution, high availability, live migration and data protection. By modernizing with HPE GreenLake and HPE VM Essentials, businesses can reduce their total cost of ownership by up to five times
- HPE Alletra Storage MP X10000: This high-performance, highly scalable object storage system enables businesses to store and retrieve data faster. Designed for exabyte scale, the X10000 delivers up to six times the performance of the competition. Its multi-protocol (MP) architecture for block, file and object storage simplifies management in hybrid environments and reduces costs by up to 40%
“HPE Discover 2024” returns one more year to Barcelona, with its European edition, attracting more than 4,500 people, including clients, analysts and specialized journalists
- New Solutions for Regulated Environments: HPE will introduce disconnected management for its private cloud and block storage offering, enabling a cloud experience in offline locations. In addition, qualified partners will be able to offer sovereign private cloud solutions powered by HPE GreenLake
- HPE Private Cloud AI, in collaboration with NVIDIA: HPE has expanded its ecosystem of partners and supported use cases, adding six new partners to the Unleash AI program to accelerate time to market with specific AI solutions. Deloitte has also expanded its collaboration with HPE and will deploy solutions such as C-Suite AI with HPE Private Cloud AI.
As Fidelma Russo, executive vice president and general manager of Hybrid Cloud, and CTO of HPE, points out, to realize the true potential of hybrid cloud and AI, companies need a custom-designed hybrid approach, “today we announce the HPE GreenLake portfolio more complete to date. With these new offerings, HPE GreenLake provides a future-proof cloud operating model for virtualized, cloud-native, and AI workloads.
Simplify Virtualization and Reduce Costs with HPE VM Essentials
For its part, the recent acquisition of Morpheus Data allows HPE GreenLake to further unify and simplify IT operations for its customers. HPE VM Essentials is the first step in integrating Morpheus into the HPE portfolio. This way, customers can manage existing virtualized workloads or migrate them to the HPE VME hypervisor, experiencing a simple VM provisioning experience on both platforms:
- Reduce Costs with HPE Integrated KVM-Based Hypervisor– HPE VM Essentials reduces costs with its cost-effective per-socket pricing model and built-in support for virtual machine discovery in existing environments and VM-as-a-service provisioning
- Management Simplification by Integrating Existing Workloads: The software can integrate existing hypervisor clusters, enabling management and provisioning of VM and kernel-based virtual machine (KVM) workloads from a single, simple interface, along with basic conversion of VM images to HPE VMs. Essentials
- Prepare for the Future with Flexible Delivery and Upgrade Options: HPE VM Essentials will be available as standalone software and integrated into HPE private cloud solutions. Customers will also be able to upgrade to the full Morpheus PlatformOps platform to add advanced hybrid cloud management, governance and cost control capabilities.
“HPE VM Essentials offers a real alternative to the status quo. With support for my existing hypervisor and a flexible path for future workloads, we can modernize our business for greater operational and resource efficiency,” said Chris Macken, vice president of IT Operations and Security at Cambrian Credit Union.
New Fast Object Storage: Exceptional Performance and Massive Scalability
The new HPE Alletra Storage MP Ideal for high-speed data lakes and modern data protection, the X10000 simplifies storage management through a single disaggregated architecture for block, file, and object storage, along with intuitive HPE GreenLake cloud management.
Faster Access to Large-Scale Object Data: Fast all-flash object storage leverages HPE’s shared and disaggregated MP storage architecture, allowing enterprises to scale capacity and performance independently. The X10000 incorporates HPE’s new simplified branding alongside the HPE Alletra Storage MP B10000, formerly known as HPE GreenLake for Block Storage.
Fast Recovery with Modern Data Protection: The X10000 offers massive restore bandwidth, enabling faster data recovery for backups and restores of critical applications. The S3-compatible object storage interface and deduplication support up to 20x data reduction and simplify integration with any backup solution. X10000 is certified for support by industry-leading vendors, such as Commvault and Veeam®, and is being validated with other leading vendors.
Collaboration with NVIDIA and expansion of the AI Ecosystem
HPE is collaborating with NVIDIA to enable a direct data path for direct memory access (DMA) transfers between GPU memory, system memory and X10000, critical for artificial intelligence (AI) applications. This direct path will further increase system bandwidth, reduce latency, and improve GPU utilization.
AI is a complex hybrid workload that is difficult and expensive for enterprises to deploy and scale. In September, HPE announced the Unleash AI program to accelerate return to value for enterprise customers through validated solutions for HPE Private Cloud AI. HPE has added six new partners to Unleash AI: Codeium, Contextual.AI, Dataiku, IronYun, Securiti and Writer. These partners will enable a variety of high-value use cases, such as AI-powered software development, advanced recovery augmented generation (RAG), intelligent video analytics, and solutions for building safe and secure Generative AI (GenAI) systems.
