Iberdrola has taken a decisive step in its ambitious technological modernization plan. After completing the total renewal of its critical distribution and marketing systems in collaboration with DXC Technology, the energy of digital change has become a strategic engine for the company. This jump marks a milestone in its evolution towards a digital, efficient and sustainable utility.

The migration of its business systems to a new cloud digital platform, promoted by modern technologies, has allowed Iberdrola to automate processes, enhance scalability, reduce costs and improve customer service, all without interrupting their daily operation. A very rare achievement in projects of this size.

“The modernization of our critical systems has been a crucial milestone in the company’s digitalization strategy. It allows us to face new business challenges, maintain our global leadership and quickly adapt to the great challenges that come,” says Sergio Merchán, Cio Global de Iberdrola.

The applied with global vision

Technological transformation is inserted into a broader context of sustained innovation. In the eleventh edition of Digital Summit, held in June 2025 under the motto “Ia momentum”the company presented more than 150 cases of artificial intelligence use that already applies globally. Its scope covers from the optimization of renewables (anticipating failures, predicting production, or protecting the avifauna) to intelligent networks capable of better estimating supply interruption times and predicting future failures.

For more than a decade, IA is already integrated into the prediction, analysis and automation processes of Iberdrola. In addition, in February of this year, the company became the first to certify its artificial intelligence management system (SGIA) with AENOR, aligned with ISO/IEC 42001 regulations.

Clouds, generation and global efficiency

The modernization of DXC Technology is complemented by the strategic alliance with Amazon Web Services (AWS), chosen as preferential cloud provider for generative workloads. Among other technologies, Iberdrola uses Amazon Bedrock and Sagemaker to develop more than 100 generative AI applications, from legal assistants to customized solutions for customers and employees.

Constant innovation and tangible return

The company has not only reinforced its technological platform, but has increased its investment in digitalization and innovation. In 2024 it allocated 290 million euros to global projects related to renewables, smart networks, cybersecurity, AI and Big Data. In addition, in the last decade it adds more than € 3,000 m in R&D, with plans to raise that figure at € 4,000 before 2030, consolidating its leadership in energy innovation.

In transport and distribution networks, it foresees an investment of € 27,000 until 2025, of which € 1,350 m will be allocated to Spain, advancing towards a more accessible, efficient and decarbonized digital infrastructure.

Sustainability integrated in each line of code

This digital deployment also reinforces the environmental commitments of the energy group. The AI Center initiatives have significantly reduce internal consumption and emission intensity, placing it in just 38 GCO₂/KWh in Europe in late 2024. This technological efficiency is aligned with the objectives of reducing absolute emissions by 65 % in 2030 and reaching a 90 % cut in 2039.
