The IT department is the main user of AI in companies, with 37% adoption. They are followed by the Operations (15%) and Marketing (14%) departments. Further behind are Human Resources (12%), Finance (11%) and Sales (10%). This is how the ESSCA IA Barometer ranks them.
“As the most experienced department in technology, IT leads the implementation and development of AI in companies. This department is usually in charge of testing and evaluating AI systems before their integration into other areas. Furthermore, many AIs are initially designed to improve IT infrastructure, optimize data management and provide support to other departments in their transition to AI-based tools,” says Dejan Glavas, Professor of Finance and Director of the AI Institute for Sustainability at ESSCA. .

The Operations department is also advancing the use of AI, using it to optimize processes, automate repetitive tasks and reduce operating costs. This includes everything from inventory management to predictive maintenance and supply chain optimization, allowing companies greater efficiency and reduced errors.
The Marketing department uses AI to personalize customer experiences, analyze large volumes of data for market segmentation and campaign optimization. AI models in this area help improve the accuracy of advertising strategies and anticipate customer needs through the analysis of consumption patterns.

In Human Resources, AI is used to optimize processes such as recruitment, selection and training, filtering resumes, evaluating candidates and personalizing development plans. In addition, it is used to automate administrative tasks such as payroll management, schedules and onboarding, improving the employee experience with chatbots, smart surveys and well-being analysis.
Dejan Glavas says that as companies become more familiar with AI, it is likely that other departments will also begin to integrate these technologies, expanding their applications within the organization.
