Amazon and Iberdrola, one of the main clean energy companies worldwide, have strengthened their strategic alliance by adding 476 additional megawatts (MW) through several energy purchase agreements (PPA) of renewable sources. This expansion covers five countries and reinforces the commitment of both companies with sustainability and clean energy.
Among the new agreements, the first PPA of Amazon in Portugal, which includes 219 MW of the Tâmega wind complex, the largest wind farm in the country. The construction of this project is scheduled for early 2025 and is expected to generate sufficient carbon free electricity to supply 128,000 homes a year.
In addition, in Spain, Amazon has signed two new energy purchase contracts totaling 257 MW of solar and wind capacity. These projects together will produce 1093 GWH of clean electricity annually, sufficient to supply about 300,000 homes.
Technological innovation with AWS
The strategic agreement between Amazon and Iberdrola, initially signed in 2022, has expanded to include new projects in existing and new markets. In total, Amazon has hired more than 66,000 GWh of renewable energy from Iberdrola along the validity of all signed PPA contracts. This collaboration not only promotes the adoption of clean energy, but also encourages technological innovation in the energy sector.
In August 2024, Iberdrola selected Amazon Web Services (AWS) as its preferred cloud supplier for generative artificial intelligence work loads. Using AWS AI capabilities, Iberdrola is improving the network connection process of new supply points and optimizing the design of wind farms through advanced simulations. In addition, the company is using AWS high performance computing (HPC) to improve weather forecast simulations in its 400 wind farms worldwide.
Iberdrola and Amazon have expanded their strategic alliance, signed in 2022 for renewable energy and cloud services allowing to migrate more work loads to AWS Spain
Outstanding projects
- Tâmega wind complex: Amazon has hired 219 MW in this project, which is the largest green hybridization in Portugal. With an investment of 350 million euros by Iberdrola, the project is expected to supply 128,000 homes and create more than 700 jobs during construction.
- Ciudad Rodrigo Photovoltaic Plant: Amazon will buy 212 MW capacity at this plant located in Salamanca. The project, with an investment of 200 million euros, will produce clean energy for 150,000 households and maintain more than 800 jobs during periods of construction. In addition, Iberdrola has pledged to support the restoration of Amayuelas square in Ciudad Rodrigo.
- Valdemoro Wind Park: Amazon will acquire the production of 45 MW of this park in Burgos, which has an installed power of 49.5 MW and will supply 48,000 homes. During its construction, the project will maintain 145 jobs, of which 40% will come from local contractors.
Commitment to sustainability
Amazon’s commitment to renewable energy PPAs is part of its objective of achieving zero carbon emissions in all its operations by 2040. With more than 600 solar and wind projects worldwide, Amazon is the largest corporate buyer of energy renewable globally and in Spain, according to Bloomberg Nef, for the fifth consecutive year.
For its part, Iberdrola has been recognized as the largest PPA saleswoman in Europe for the second consecutive year, according to the Pexakark Renewables Market Outlook 2025 report. This collaboration with Amazon not only reinforces its leadership in the clean energy market, but also promotes The transition to a more sustainable future.
