The PFU company belonging to the Ricoh group, and manufacturer of document scanners, expands its recently launched SP series with the new RICOH SP-2230 and RICOH SP-2240. Both models incorporate a USB connection and are aimed at organizations that carry out their digitization processes directly from a computer. They are a benchmark in the market in terms of speed and workload management.

The SP-2230 and SP-2240 maintain the speed, ability to work with different types of documents, and image quality of network-enabled models.

“The new equipment is presented as a more affordable alternative to the Ricoh SP-2230N and SP-2240N, launched last June, with the aim of bringing professional digitization closer to those organizations that work directly from a PC. To reduce the cost, they dispense with the Ethernet connection of the N models and DirectScan, which allows scanning without the need for a PC, as well as the buffer memories necessary for these functions,” says Jesus Cabañas, Regional Manager of PFU in Iberia.

For his part, Yasunari Shimizu, president and CEO of PFU (EMEA) Limited, points out: “Not all organizations need a network connection or the ability to scan without using a computer. The SP-2230 and SP-2240 offer a more affordable alternative for those companies that work from a PC, maintaining the reliability, image quality and ease of use that characterize Ricoh scanners,” he concludes.

Speeds up to 40 pages per minute

The Ricoh SP-2240 reaches a scanning speed of up to 40 pages per minute, while the SP-2230 reaches up to 30 pages per minute. Both incorporate an automatic feeder with a capacity of 80 sheets and have a compact design to facilitate installation in workplaces with limited space.

The two models allow you to digitize documents of different formats and weights, from 27 g/m² tickets to 413 g/m² folders, as well as office documents, plastic cards and A3 documents folded in half. They can also process different types of documents within the same batch, without the need to previously classify them by format or weight. Detecting problems during feeding also helps protect originals during scanning.

Imaging technology to improve OCR

With more than 50 years of engineering experience and more than 15 million scanners sold worldwide, Ricoh has a long history of developing document capture technologies.

The Ricoh SP-2230 and SP-2240 incorporate PFU Clear Image Capture, integrated into the scanner hardware, to capture the original document with high optical resolution. Added to this technology is PaperStream IP, the driver included as standard, which processes the image from the PC to improve the sharpness of the characters and reduce elements such as background color, shadows, patterns and other marks.

The combination of both technologies allows us to obtain cleaner and more homogeneous images and improve the precision of optical character recognition (OCR), reducing the need for manual corrections. Features such as automatic paper size detection and image rotation also help speed up the process.

Prices and availability

The Ricoh SP-2230 and SP-2240 require minimal setup and are designed to make common scanning tasks easier. With PaperStream ClickScan, users can perform spot scans from the PC by selecting the “Scan” option from the right-click menu. They can also initiate scanning directly from the button on the device and send documents to a predefined destination, including cloud locations. Both are available today and the recommended retail prices are as follows:

  • Ricoh SP-2240: €531
  • Ricoh SP-2230: €416
