Scandit has announced “Self-Checkout Loss Prevention,” its new real-time vision AI solution that helps retailers detect loss patterns, whether accidental or intentional, as they occur. The solution allows customers to correct their errors autonomously, without employee intervention in most cases, to maintain uninterrupted payment flow.
Reduce organizational losses
Scandit’s entry into the loss prevention market addresses one of the most visible tensions in the retail industry: reducing losses at self-checkout without creating friction that frustrates customers or overloads store teams.
Currently, self-checkouts handle 54% of transactions in stores that have them. These stores record losses 33% higher than similar stores that do not have self-checkout checkouts, and losses increase an average of 22% in the year after their installation, according to the ECR Retail Loss Report “Losses at Self-Checkout Checkouts 2026.” According to one European retailer, random checks can last more than two minutes, causing friction with customers and taking up employee time.
Scandit’s Self-Checkout Loss Prevention solution issues an on-screen notification to customers or, if intervention is required, an alert to staff to correct any issues detected before the transaction is completed. This allows more than 75% of losses attributed to self-checkouts to be recovered or avoided, including known loss patterns such as missed scans, items not intentionally scanned, items left in cart, or abandoned transactions.

The self-checkout loss prevention system offers them a software-based solution to detect problems in real time, with a process configurable according to each retailer’s policy. Scalable implementation for business
The loss prevention system at self-checkout checkouts is implemented using a per-station architecture, which eliminates the need for dedicated servers and complex installations, allowing for scalable implementation, from small businesses to large hypermarkets. Compatible with any hardware, this solution works with existing camera infrastructure (whether integrated, commercial cameras, or standard security cameras located above the self-checkout station). This eliminates the need for dedicated AI hardware and maintains a low total cost of ownership.
With privacy as a priority, the solution processes video at the station and is designed to help retailers meet their GDPR obligations. Item and transaction analysis only eliminates the need for facial or biometric identification, thus avoiding practices prohibited by the EU AI Law. Additionally, it is backed by Scandit’s ISO 27001 certification.
“One of the challenges with visual AI verifications at self-checkouts has been the high infrastructure cost and latency of some traditional solutions, which often created a disconnect between behavior and the moment of intervention, causing confusion for all involved,” adds Greg Buzek, president and principal analyst at IHL Group. “A lightweight, easy-to-deploy solution in stores eliminates that cost and latency, and when existing cameras can be reused, it reduces costs even further. This is an advantage for retailers: it deters intentional theft and quickly resolves inadvertent errors that would otherwise slow down the transaction process.”

With this announcement and the launch of the Age Verification solution in July 2026, Scandit makes it possible to significantly reduce the two main friction points that require employee intervention. “Age-Verified Self-Checkout” allows retailers to automate and verify purchases of age-restricted items at self-checkouts to reduce delays, eliminate unnecessary employee intervention, and improve regulatory compliance.
