Thirty years are the ones that Sarenet celebrates and to celebrate it, it has decided to invest 20 million euros in what will be the new company data center and that adds to the other eight that the firm already has in different parts of the national territory. This voice operator and data and accommodation services for companies is already building in Derio, in the Bilbao Technology Park, this new Data Center is located on an area of 1000 square meters and will have 340 racks. It is expected that it can come into operation at the end of the year or principles that come.

In these 30 years of activity, the Basque firm has consolidated a comprehensive services catalog that covers connectivity, data accommodation, cloud services, voice solutions, network and systems engineering and cybersecurity. In addition, since 2023, the company has a 24 × 7 service of a security operations center (SOC) and in 2024 has integrated artificial intelligence both in its protection services and in technical customer service.

The keys

In this sense, the new Data Center is designed to strengthen cybersecurity, with a commitment to sustainability, and a clear commitment to the development of artificial intelligence and the growth of SME managed cybersecurity and data spaces.

The sovereignty of the data will be one of the main claims for companies to bet on the new Sarenet Data Center. And as Roberto Beitia, president of Sarenet, explained, “there is increasing concern where the data is housed. Companies are working with hyperscales and although they have enviable power and quality, they are not subject to Spanish jurisdiction in such a way that if the US government asks for the information they are obliged to provide it.

The difference with hyperscalar is that this infrastructure allows Sarenet to maintain total control over customer data, minimizing subcontracting and ensuring that the information never comes out of the company’s management perimeter. This philosophy of “sovereignty of the data” and proximity is essential for SMEs, increasingly in need of local solutions, safe and adapted to the new digital context.

The project has been designed under the most demanding standards of energy efficiency and sustainability, and will only consume 100% green energy. It includes its own photovoltaic installation and is built to obtain the LEED Gold certification. In addition, Sarenet is part of the “Covenant for Climate Neutrality in Data Centers” (CNDCP), which reinforces its commitment to the environment.

The new data center will also facilitate the deployment of more advanced solutions such as dynamic network segmentation and protection against DDOS attacks. In addition, it will allow the implementation of artificial intelligence solutions aimed at SMEs, with a securized and confidential approach, thus reinforcing the protection of sensitive data. All this helps to guarantee solid contingency plans against critical events such as pandemics, blackouts or natural catastrophes.

A conscious bet

If we take into account the economic data provided by the company, the investment of 20 million euros is a challenge. The firm, which currently has a workforce of 130 professionals, reached an income at 2024 of 28 million euros, with a 6% increase with respect to the previous year and an EBITDA of 3.15 million. The investment in R&D, for its part, was 1.3 million in 2024 and 1.8 million planned in 2025, 6% of its turnover. This Sarenet commitment to innovation through a solid commitment to R&D is revealed with projects that address key challenges for SMEs.
