Europe is Earth of SMEs (small and medium enterprises) and Spain too. 99% of European Union companies are part of this category. They are an engine of economic activity and employment generation, so it is essential that they be competitive, resilient and be able to address their digital transformation.

Its digitalization is key to agility with the changes that occur in the market. “Without a doubt, although the SME market is very fragmented, in general companies face common challenges, ranging from the fight against loss of productivity to the need for a regulation adapted to their peculiarities or specific measures to promote their growth. In much of them, the solution goes through digitalization,” says Carlos Castillo, Fibratel Business Director.

For his part, Juan Francisco Moreda, responsible for the Fibratel Cybersecurity /FSAFE Unit ensures that cybersecurity is no longer only a technical need but a critical business enabling. «SMEs must protect their devices and hardware, cloud environments and their networks, and each of them will have a different casuistry, so we recommend a previous analysis to assess their level of vulnerability, before the installation and deployment of solutions or services. It does not have to be a great investment, but it is important that they opt for the right tools. ”

The digitalization of SMEs

As a digitalizing agent of the digital kit program since 2022, the company has identified three priority areas that contribute to increase its productivity and competitiveness:

  • Safe connectivity and communications: Connectivity is essential to ensure business continuity, the company’s networks must be safe, just like navigation. SMEs must protect their interactions, whether they are called voice, video or data, through any network and device.
  • Digital job: Technology has promoted a change in the way of working and today, in an environment in which a hybrid or distributed work model is imposed, having the necessary collaboration tools has become a key to attract and retain talent, improve work experience and increase SME productivity. “The virtual office facilitates that all team members can connect at any time and place, in addition to promoting the work in collaboration,” says David Carrión, director of /FIC, the company’s communications unit.

In line with this, and since the collaboration needs have increased, SMEs need a smart work space, conditioning meetings rooms with screens, projection equipment, microphone and videoconference systems, digital blackboards and all the wiring necessary to achieve an efficient environment.

  • Cybersecurity: Sector studies indicate that cybercounts concentrate their attacks on SMEs increasingly regularly, a worrying fact if we take into account that attacks today are more precise and enhanced by artificial intelligence. The technological environment of each company must be protected to avoid cyber attacks that lead to data losses or in the paralysis of the activity that carry economic or reputational damage.
