Synology has announced the availability of ActiveProtect Manager (APM) update 1.1, a strategic measure aimed at significantly strengthening the security and cyber resilience of organizations. The release expands compliance capabilities, simplifies mass agent deployment, and extends remote storage options for long-term data retention.

Market success and commitment to integration

Synology’s data protection solutions, encompassing Active Backup and ActiveProtect, have already protected more than 30 million workloads globally. This performance has been recognized by the industry, as evidenced by the 4.9/5 rating and 99% recommendation ActiveProtect earned from customers in Gartner Peer Insights in August 2025. Additionally, the vendor was named a Representative Vendor in the Gartner 2025 Market Guide for Enterprise Backup Storage Devices.

“As cybersecurity threats intensify and IT budgets tighten, the market demands an integrated, secure and scalable solution that delivers optimal ROI. ActiveProtect is our answer, and the great reception from the market has reinforced our commitment to continue advancing our solutions,” he highlights. Key developments for cyber resilience and compliance

APM 1.1 release introduces critical improvements to strengthen your enterprise data protection strategy:

– On the security front, the implementation of the new Allow Access Mode (Allow Access Mode)

This feature provides granular control of the network, allowing incoming traffic only from previously whitelisted IP addresses during backup operations. Once the backup is complete, or if it ends early, the system automatically reverts to full isolation mode, reinforcing data security.

– Regarding the regulatory compliancethe update allows organizations to perform multi-site and multi-geo backups

This functionality is vital for maintaining data in designated geographic locations, facilitating compliance with local and international data residency requirements, such as EU GDPR or US FINRA or SEC regulations, and even specific regulations such as HIPAA.

Data management and remote storage expansion

IT administration also benefits from APM 1.1 thanks to the new massive deploymentwhich allows administrators to easily install batch agents, including to support Proxmox environments.

Additionally, ActiveProtect has expanded its support for tiering and remote storage options. The platform now facilitates the seamless movement of data to the chosen remote storage destination, thereby meeting long-term retention needs. While there was already support for on-premises solutions (Synology SA and HD series) and cloud platforms (C2 Object Storage and Amazon S3), APM 1.1 expands this support to include the Wasabi cloud storage and select devices from the XS/XS+ models.

The ActiveProtect platform represents a solution that integrates hardware and software seamlessly, resulting in a significant reduction in total cost of ownership (TCO) compared to traditional self-integrated backup solutions. This unified platform is designed to centralize the protection of up to 150,000 workloads distributed across 2,500 sites, covering servers, databases, virtual machines, endpoints and SaaS services. Comprehensive security is ensured with advanced features such as WORM storage (Write Once Read Many), backups air-gapped and self-healing integrity checks.
