They asked a group of people why they would decide to buy a new iPhone. Contrary to appearances, new features are not a priority.
Replacing a smartphone with a newer model is a topic that could be discussed for hours. Everyone has their reasons and justifications. However, there is no denying that replacing a smartphone with a new one is, above all, a big expense these days. Even the so-called mid-range costs money – so there is no question of spending change here, because even if we decide on several dozen installments in a subscription: it will still be a considerable sum each month.
CIRP, or Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, conducted a survey asking about the reasons for buying a new iPhone. The premiere of the latest models is just around the corner (the conference at which the giant from Cupertino will reveal its cards will start on September 9, i.e. next Monday). This gave us the perfect excuse to ask about the reasons why those taking part in the survey will decide to buy a new phone.
Why They’ll Buy the New iPhone? The Answer Might Surprise You
Among the responses included in the chart below are:
- The old phone was outdated
- The phone was lost, damaged or stolen
- Wanting the latest features
- Financial incentive from the operator
- Improving network quality, including the transition to 5G
- iPhone ownership by friends and family
The responses from those taking part in the survey are as follows:
As you can see, as many as 44% of respondents decide to buy a new model because their current smartphone is outdated. Behind them, the largest group are those whose current smartphone was lost/damaged or stolen. Only the next, with 18%, are gadget enthusiasts who decide on this considerable expense because of new functions. Next, 6%, are users who are encouraged by the operator, looking for a better quality network (2%) and having friends and/or family (1%) to be in the same ecosystem. Considering that we are talking about American recipients, we can probably even talk about the curse of the blue bubble here…
The results of this survey may surprise many. After all, “only gadget lovers and show-offs buy the latest models”
The opinion about many users reaching for the latest smartphone models for years remains rather unchanged – and many think about them in the context of gadget lovers. Because in fact – switching from generation to generation in the current flagship reality does not make much sense. Last year’s, or even two/three year old smartphones still work great, and there are de facto as many new functions as a cat cried. But looking at how many smartphones are sold each year (after all, we count it in millions), there are not as many of these gadget lovers as some imagine. And contrary to appearances, what – at least according to the survey – drives sales and encourages reaching for a new model is not a whim, but an actual need.
