The most interesting thing that has recently happened to consoles and players in general is certainly hybridization of devices. Now you can, for example, Steam Deck, take a computer literally with you and play in a portable form. But what if the next step looks completely different and literally transforms? This is not a joke, as we see after tests, it really works.
The financing campaign of an interesting Chinese manufacturer’s project has just started, which specializes in the portable playing catalog. Their portfolio is filled with crazy variations on GameBoy, PSP and of course Nintendo Switch with the addition of … keyboard. All these inventions, however, will pale with the latest announcement, whose prototype can already be seen, which will make it impossible to forget about it.
In this way I want to play always – PSP and DS in one? Apparently it is possible!
At first glance, OnexSugar looks like another Handheld with Android, which is trying to squeeze between Steam Deck, Switch and Legion of other similar devices. But after a few moments you can see that it might be something completely different than we have got used to so far and it is not only about components, because these are okay, but without exaggeration.
What distinguishes Sugar 1 is the fact that this console It literally transforms depending on the player’s needs. The same as our toys from the past, do you want a truck? Please. Now work? To work! It’s identical here – do you want a classic handheld with one screen? Here you go. Do you dream of a nintendo DS system, where you follow the action on one screen, and on the other map or equipment? It is also possible. Just turn the elements to the indoor space. In short: this is the fulfillment of my dreams, PSP and DS in one device.
Cybertron transformation
The heart of this device is the Snapdragon G3 Gen 3 processor, i.e. a Qualcomm system dedicated to mobile gaming. With Ray Tracing support, support for Wi-Fi 7J and the 8th Kyro CPU core, a bit like a set from a gaming smartphone, which here is harnessed to support two OLED screens. The main one has a diagonal of 6.01 inches, but auxiliary 3.92 inches, but this is not the most important here, but rather does not attract the greatest attention.
The most impressive is the way Sugar 1 changes in the user’s hands. Modular controllers can be switched, enabling a quick transition from the classic handheld mode to a fold -out, reminiscent of Nintendo DS. So, thoughts immediately differ to how older games could look on this console. However, this does not mean that Sugar 1 will not cope with top hits like Genshin Impact. A solid processor and Android open the door to thousands of titles. Interestingly, in practice, on one screen you can start the game, and on the other keep a discord chat, browse the guides, or even stream the gameplay. What sounds exciting on the one hand, even a pc, but on the other, I always wonder if we really need such combine harvesters?
This cannot be hidden, it looks … at least coarse
The manufacturer will start on Monday with the campaign at Indiegogo, in which you will be able to support the project that will put the biggest test before the idea – will anyone want to spend at least $ 600 on this news? It cannot be denied that Sugar 1 does not look like a premium device, and the prototype shown by the Verge journalist does not look super comfortable. However, it is supposed to weigh about 500 grams, so less than Steam Deck and at least the hinges look solid.
Testers also claim that despite the presence of two screens and an extensive transformation mechanism, the device is solidly made and fits well in your hands. The controllers were equipped with analogues with a hall effect, as to the victims of the so -called drift with Nintendo Switch. The 21.5 WH battery allows for several hours of intensive play, and quick charging is to make even a longer session not a problem.
Looking at Sugar 1, it’s hard not to get the impression that this is where the portable console market should be aimed in this direction … Of course, if I had something to say about it. This console looks like a dream come true for an endless adventure with Nintendo 3DS, but unfortunately we have to look in the eyes – it will be a gadget, nice, but not a mass audience. Nevertheless, I will never look at the switch the same again, but it could be done better!
