Barcelona consolidates its role as an epicenter of technological innovation in Europe with the opening of a new headquarters of Trend Micro, one of the great international names in cybersecurity. The Japanese company has chosen the city as its basis for operations for Europe, in a movement that reinforces the attractiveness of the Catalan capital as a destination for high -impact technology companies.
The inauguration, held with the presence of institutional and business representatives, marks a milestone for the local ecosystem, which in recent years has experienced sustained growth in terms of investment, employment and technological specialization. Among the attendees were Nadia Quevedo, commissioner for Economic Promotion, Commerce and Restoration of the Barcelona City Council, as well as spokesmen of the Barcelona Investment Office and the Japan-Spanish Business Circle.
The new center, already in operation, will focus on key areas such as engineering, operations, support and business development. In addition, it is conceived as a space for collaboration with universities and actors in the sector, to promote innovation and the development of new cyber -defense solutions.

A city that adds and projects
In 2024, Barcelona added 160 international technological hubs, a 22% growth compared to the previous year. This ecosystem generated an estimated economic impact of 2.8 billion euros, with more than 34,000 professionals employed and more than 6,000 new jobs created only in the last year.
“Trend Micro’s new hub fits fully with Barcelona’s vision of adding strategic projects that contribute value, create quality occupation and reinforce the global position of our city as a leader in innovation,” says Nadia Quevedo. From the Consistory, they emphasize that collaboration with the private sector is being key to consolidating an economic model based on technology, knowledge and international projection.
A sector in full expansion
The cybersecurity sector in Catalonia lives a moment of unprecedented expansion. The billing reached 1,473 million euros in 2024, 18.7% more than the previous year. Currently, 577 companies specialized in this area operate in the region, with more than 10,000 professionals in staff. More than 90% of these companies are dedicated to protection against digital threats, while 26.4% export their services, reflecting a strong international component.
With this new investment, Trend Micro joins a growing list of technology companies that not only see in Barcelona an attractive place to operate, but also a space where to actively contribute to the development of a robust, resilient and safe digital economy.
