How much drink can be prepared from one sodastream syrup?
If you bought sodastream or are just trying to do so, you will definitely ask yourself sooner or later: how much drink can you prepare from one bottle of syrup? Apparently the producer writes as it is, but in practice it can be different. Some say that they are enough for a week, others that it ends after 2 days. Where is the truth? As usual – it depends.
What the producer says – and what does it actually mean
On the Sodastream syrup label you will find information that one bottle (440 ml) allows you to prepare about 9 liters of ready drink. The problem is that no one says exactly what exactly means “about”. Is this the maximum amount we will squeeze if we use an absolute minimum portion of syrup? Or rather real value for an average user who likes the drink to have a taste, not just color?
Standard proportions – around 1:25
Simple mathematics indicates that we need to use about 49 ml of syrup for every liter of drink. This means the proportions around 1:25. In practice – which will be confirmed by many people with Sodastream – we pour a little more. Why? Because many of us expect an intense taste, especially if we previously drank classic carbonated drinks with a high content of sugar or sweeteners. A real portion of syrup can be up to 60 ml per liter of water – especially with more subdued flavors. In this arrangement from one bottle (440 ml) we will get not 9, but more 7-8 liters of drink. Still a lot, but less than according to marketing “up to 9 liters of drink”. The magic word “to” means that the producer does not lie.
The type of syrup matters
Not every syrup is the same – some are more concentrated, others less. Classic flavors, such as Cola, Lemon-Lime or Orange, usually have a fairly intense flavor profile and with the right proportions really resemble known drinks. In turn, the “zero” versions, without the addition of sugar, may require a little more syrup to get a satisfactory taste. Here, a lot depends on personal preferences – some prefer a more “diet” approach, others want it to be “like a can”.
How to increase syrup performance? A few clever tricks
Do you want a bottle of syrup to last for longer? There are ways to do it.
- First of all: Grsing water well. The drink tastes better if CO2 is strong – then even a smaller amount of syrup gives a better taste impression.
- Second: Experiment with mixing. Instead of pouring more one syrup, try to combine two in a smaller amount – sometimes interesting compositions are created that better mask the lack of sugar.
- Third: serve heavily chilled drinks. “On ice” the taste should be more intense – especially with “zero” versions.
Economics in practice – how much does a liter of drink from Sodastream cost?
Let’s count on a specific example. If you buy Pepsi Max Sodastream Syrup in a 440 ml bottle for about PLN 17.30 (so much I was able to find it on the cheapest allegro), and the manufacturer declares that it is enough to prepare 9 liters of drink, the cost of one liter comes out around PLN 1.92. For comparison – the Pepsi store max. 1.5 l is an expense of PLN 8 today, which it gives over PLN 5 per liter. Even if you find a promotion, the price difference will still be noticeable. Of course, you still need to add the cost of gas, i.e. the CO2 cartridge, as well as the device itself.
What to watch out for? Traps and disappointments
Not every syrup tastes as you expect. It is worth testing Cola (or any other drink) of different manufacturers. Not only Sodastream produces its own concentrates. The second thing is expiry dates. Open syrups must be stored in the fridge and used at a certain time (usually a few weeks), otherwise they can change the taste or thickened. After a long time, the syrup sometimes delaminates – especially if it was not well shocked before use. This is not the end of the world, but it is worth remembering this little thing.
Is it worth investing in sodastream syrups?
If you like to have control over what you drink, you do not want to wear a supermarket welds and you are not bothered by independent “mixing”, then Sodastream syrups are a really sensible choice. How much will you make a drink out of them? In theory, up to 12 liters, if “priests” with proportions. In practice, probably closer to 8-9 liters. As I wrote earlier, it is worth testing the syrups of various manufacturers. It may turn out that some are more efficient.
