Almost all companies are using Artificial Intelligence in some way or another in some of their business processes. There is no doubt about that, but what does AI bring to business? How can we ensure that this value is sustainable?

For the past few years, the conversation about AI has focused on the promises of the technology: mass automation, cost reduction, generation of new products or services, and even complete disruptions of business models. However, recent experience shows that the true impact does not come solely from technical innovation, but from the way AI is integrated into business processes and managed under clear standards.

What AI brings to business

To find out what AI brings to business, the company specialized in analytics, FICO, conducted a survey of more than 250 executives from large companies in different sectors. When asked what AI brings to the business, more than half (56.8%) said that defining standards such as bias mitigation, performance analysis or secure data management for a responsible AI implementation is a key factor in generating value, compared to 40% who thought that the disruptor for ROI would be Generative AI.

This data reflects an important cultural shift: Responsible AI is no longer perceived as an external control framework, but rather as a direct enabler of return on investment, and yet only 12.7% of CIOs or CTOs in these organizations admit to having these types of AI-related operational standards.

AI is no longer the future

To know what AI brings to business, the first thing you have to do is accept that this technology is no longer a future-oriented investment. It is an operational reality, which is generating tangible returns and driving the next generation of innovation. But we also have to be clear that harnessing the full value of AI requires more than better models. Requires robust standards that define how to develop, deploy and monitor AI; robust systems that ensure transparency and traceability; and collaboration to avoid silos and promote scaling without technological fragmentation.

That’s why, across industries, AI leaders are coming to the same conclusion when asking what AI brings to business. The true differentiators are not advances in text generation or image synthesis. Rather, they are structural: strong business processes, strict AI governance standards, better interdepartmental communication channels, and a unified platform that facilitates all of these elements at once.

That is, technology hype is giving way to business pragmatism with an approach based on responsible AI, and yet only 7% of organizations surveyed by FICO admit to having fully adopted these types of standards. In other words, for most companies, once models are brought into production, they are left free and uncontrolled. This clearly falls outside of a responsible approach to the use of AI.

Responsible AI eliminates risks

Organizations that invest in model auditing, bias detection, and explainability are not just mitigating risk—they are positioning themselves to lead. And the data suggests that investing more resources in implementing responsible AI standards, rather than focusing on autonomous or generative AI, will pay big dividends in the long term.

That is, for many, responsible AI is going from being an abstract principle to becoming an operational imperative. While the first waves of AI adoption focused on technical experimentation and generative novelty, today’s leaders are recalibrating their approach. In this transition towards maturity, trust and responsibility become the true currency. Executives are no longer asking just “what can AI do?”, but “how do we integrate AI into the business to generate measurable, reliable and sustainable value?”

In fact, when we asked these executives, who were mostly CIOs or CTOs, what they expect from AI in the next 18 months and how they are going to measure their ROI, 60% indicated that the investment priority would be AI for decision making, but emphasizing explainability, traceability and integration with business logic.

This figure gives us subtle but significant information. Rather than pursuing cutting-edge AI innovations for their own sake, organizations are increasingly focused on embedding AI into core operational processes safely, reliably, and with demonstrable impact. That is, the industry is called to deliver consistent value, not to explore scientific AI projects.

What to expect from AI: more collaboration with humans

A similar pattern appears when analyzing the main drivers of innovation in AI for the next five years. Human-AI collaboration is considered the most interesting prospect of future innovation by 44.5% of respondents, closely followed by the adoption of responsible AI with audit protocols in its use (44%). Real-time solutions and improved customer experiences also generated high levels of enthusiasm.

A recognition is therefore sought that guarantees that the long-term promise of AI lies not only in automation, but in the expansion of human capabilities. While increasing attention is being paid to generative AI and autonomous AI, the greatest level of optimism lies in empowering people with traditional AI within responsible and auditable frameworks.

And beyond that, it is necessary for professional teams to also work collaboratively: on too many occasions, we see data managers operating in silos independent of business managers, end users or risk managers. According to the FICO study, 72% of analytics and AI directors surveyed admit that collaboration between technology and business teams is a real challenge in their respective organizations.

It’s still early to declare the end of generative AI’s dominance in board conversations. But data suggests that forward-thinking organizations are increasingly cautious about betting too heavily on potential without a measurable business implementation plan and reliable, sustained value generation.

Autonomous AI (that is, one that requires minimal human supervision), for example, was selected by only 1 in 10 respondents as a driver of future innovation, and many cited it as a serious ROI risk, due to concerns about unpredictability, instability and technical immaturity.

In short, we are witnessing a decisive step towards the maturity of AI. Responsible AI is not just a protection measure: it is becoming a strategic differentiator. Those who build AI systems with built-in ethics, aligned oversight, and cross-functional integration will not only be positioned to scale, but will also be setting themselves up for long-term competitive advantage.
