Telefónica, through its digital business unit Telefónica Tech, and Google Cloud have announced a strategic alliance to launch a new sovereign cloud offering. This proposal will allow public administrations and Spanish private companies, especially in highly regulated sectors, to maintain stricter control over their data hosted in the Google cloud.

Google Cloud expands the capabilities of its Madrid region to provide Data Boundary services within its cloud platform, both to customers and its extensive ecosystem of partners in Spain. In this cloud model, Google Cloud has selected Telefónica as a trusted partner in digital sovereignty to offer this service and manage the necessary controls that guarantee the protection of data in the cloud.

Greater control of data in the sovereign cloud

The service, based on Google Cloud’s on-premises cloud infrastructure, provides verifiable controls over data protection, data residency, and staff access. This allows compliance with privacy and digital sovereignty requirements in Spain within cloud environments.

Through this joint cloud solution, the information that organizations store in Google Cloud is encrypted using keys generated and stored by Telefónica in its own sovereign cloud. In this way, these keys are created and managed by a sovereign operator from Spanish territory, which reinforces security in the cloud against unauthorized access from external jurisdictions.

Sofía Collado, CEO of Telefónica Tech, states: “At Telefónica, our ambition is to become the best access route to digital technologies through continuous innovation and the development of new cloud solutions that add value to our customers. This new cloud offering is a clear example of that commitment, as it allows organizations to define precise data residency policies, access control and information protection through encryption keys managed outside of public cloud environments. As part of our commitment to sovereignty digital, we also offer a comprehensive 24/7 support and monitoring service, along with continuous auditing capabilities in the cloud that help detect any changes that may compromise regulatory compliance.”

For his part, Isaac Hernández, general director of Google Cloud for Iberia, adds: “There should be no conflict between Spain’s digital sovereignty and its economic competitiveness in the cloud. This collaboration with Telefónica demonstrates our commitment to customers’ freedom of choice in the cloud, allowing organizations not to have to choose between autonomy and innovation. By combining our advanced cloud capabilities with Telefónica’s local operational control and encryption management, we are enabling companies and public administrations to innovate securely and reliably. in the cloud, on your own terms.”

As Spanish companies and public institutions move forward to modernize their IT infrastructures and adopt technologies such as artificial intelligence and advanced cloud data analytics, this collaboration provides a solid foundation for secure and compliant innovation. Thanks to this initiative, Google Cloud and Telefónica promote a cloud ecosystem that favors growth, operational resilience and technological innovation.
