Nike introduced its revolutionary footwear a few years ago. Now it’s shutting down the app that supports it – and with it, some of the features offered there will disappear.

Every time we talk about gadgets that need a special application or some kind of background dependent on the creators to work properly — the same discussion appears. A discussion that is concluded with the question: I wonder how long this will work.

These questions, however, arise for a reason. We have witnessed many times how application developers abandon their products and magical functionalities disappear overnight. And sometimes, even if everything still works, things do not look so rosy in the context of the security of the given solutions – which comes back like a boomerang in the case of smart home solutions… and not only.

Players are often afraid that game publishers will fool them and pull the plug, and they will lose access to purchased products. Compared to what Nike has just done – this is still nothing. Because their footwear inspired by the iconic “Back to the Future” is losing a key function.

Shoes worth almost 1,400 PLN will lose options. Nike is discontinuing the application

The Back to the Future-inspired shoes that lace themselves and offer colorful lighting controlled via an app do have physical buttons that allow you to turn them on and off, monitor the battery level, adjust how tightly they are laced, etc. But they will no longer be able to adjust the lighting — that’s something that is only available via the app. And it is supposed to disappear from digital stores in early August. And only users who have already installed the app will be able to use it.

This is one of the examples that shows that many technological gadgets are “disposables” whose full functionality we can only enjoy here and now. And every time we decide to buy such expensive accessories from a new category – it is worth keeping this in mind.
