NVIDIA Unveils RTX 40×0 SUPER Cards

A few days ago, NVIDIA announced a new family of GeForce RTX 40 SUPER graphics cards, which will include the GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER, GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER, and GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER. The latest iteration of the NVIDIA Ada Lovelace architecture used in these models delivers even better performance than the standard models presented over a year ago, and are available at more attractive prices. This was achieved by improving the specification, i.e. activating a larger number of computing units in the chip compared to the base models. While maintaining similar clock speeds, the new cards should offer a dozen or so percent better performance compared to their direct predecessors.

The GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER graphics card is expected to be up to 1.4x faster than the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti without DLSS Frame Generation, also providing higher performance in traditional rasterization. The RTX 4080 SUPER offers more cores and faster memory, which translates into higher performance. These cards will be available for sale from January 31 at prices starting at PLN 4,999. The RTX 4070 Ti SUPER is the perfect graphics card for games with maximum graphic settings at 1440p and even 4K resolution. Compared to the RTX 4070 Ti, it has more cores, a frame buffer increased to 16GB and a 256-bit memory bus, which will significantly increase the bandwidth to 672 GB per second. The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER cards will be available in stores from January 24 at prices starting at PLN 3,999.

The weakest model in the new family is the RTX 4070 SUPER graphics card equipped with 20% more cores than the RTX 4070, making it even faster than the RTX 3090, while drawing significantly less energy. Thanks to DLSS 3, its advantage increases even more, which we will have the opportunity to check today. The cards should already be available in stores in Poland at prices starting from PLN 2,999. We had the opportunity to test one of these models over the past few days, and the results of these tests are presented below.

Palit JetStream GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER 12GB – specification

NVIDIA is slowly introducing new cards to the market, new models will appear at weekly intervals. The first to go is the GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER, and we had the opportunity to test just such a card from Palit. This is a factory overclocked model, which will probably be available at a slightly higher price than the suggested PLN 2,999. However, this does not change the fact that it is still quite a reasonable amount for a card that should allow for free gaming at a resolution of around 1440p with very high graphics quality settings. The specification is not particularly surprising, the RTX 4070 SUPER is the same chip that we had in the RTX 4070, but this time with a larger number of computing units unlocked. However, we still have 12 GB of VRAM and a similar power demand, which should not exceed 220 W under load.

Palit JetStream GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER 12 GB

Palit has always offered graphics cards at attractive prices compared to its rivals, and this tradition has been maintained this time. It will probably be no different with the JetStream GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER OC model, which should already be available in the first stores. The card certainly makes an impression with its size, although as we have already gotten used to, the dimensions are largely due to the extensive radiator with many heat pipes and three fans. The PCB itself is about half the size of the entire card. The cooling system is semi-passive, which means that when displaying the desktop, the card is silent, cooled only by a large radiator.

The card’s construction is very solidly made, reinforced with aluminum frames that keep the large radiator in check. Thanks to this, we don’t have the impression that it is a delicate card, and after mounting in the PCI Express 16x slot, it sits firmly in the case and gives no reason to worry. Fans of lights will probably not be delighted, but as I mentioned, thanks to this the price should be attractive compared to the competition.

The entire structure is stabilized to the greatest extent by the so-called back-plate, which is a steel plate to which the PCB and the entire cooling system are attached. In the back, it has an openwork structure to ensure proper air flow. The card itself is 32 cm long, so it is worth checking before buying whether it will fit in your case, especially since it de facto takes up 3 slots due to the extensive cooling system.

On the large bracket, which takes up 2 PCIe slots, we will find a standard set of video ports, i.e. 3x DisplayPort 1.4 and 1x HDMI 2.1. There are not many, but it will certainly be enough even in the most demanding applications. The bracket also acts as a stabilizer for the entire structure, which is clearly visible from the large number of screws with which it is attached to the radiator.

The power demand of the GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER cards is not record-breaking, it is officially around 220 W, but NVIDIA still decided to use its own power connector, which generated a lot of bad press. In this model, I did not notice it overheating, and the adapter included in the set, to which we connect 2 PCIe-8pin plugs, fits perfectly and sits firmly in the socket. In principle, apart from poor aesthetic values in a housing with glass, it does not interfere in any way and is much more convenient than 2 or 3 PCIe-8pin sockets plugged in next to each other.

Palit JetStream GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER 12GB – performance

The test configuration consists of a standard Intel Core i9-9900K processor and 16 GB of DDR4-3200 MHz memory, which were mounted on an ASUS board with an Intel Z370 chipset. The whole thing ran under the control of Windows 11 23H2 in the 64-bit version, which was installed on a WD Black SN750 drive with a capacity of 1 TB. All of this is powered by the Corsair RM850x with a power of 850 W. During the tests, I used the latest available drivers from NVIDIA. You can find the test results in the graphs below.

The test results are as follows:

In my new system configuration, I have a fairly limited base of comparison, so the results of the RTX 4070 SUPER may not look too impressive. It is worth remembering, however, that the RTX 4080 is still a much more expensive card than the model that premieres today, and the difference in performance is around 20-25%. According to NVIDIA’s announcements, the RTX 4070 SUPER is great for gaming at 1440p resolution, even at very high quality settings with ray tracing turned on and without DLSS or DLSS Frame Generation boosters.

It is also worth noting that using DLSS3 or DLSS Frame Generation allows you to significantly increase the number of frames displayed without much loss of image quality. It is also significant that the RTX 4070 SUPER needs much less energy than the RTX 4080. It is also worth adding that the RTX 4070 SUPER performs well during rendering, in the Blender 4.0.0 test it achieves results as in the image below, which are again about 25% weaker than the RTX 4080, but the difference in price is currently about 60%.

Palit JetStream GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER 12GB – noise and power consumption

As I mentioned, the Palit JetStream GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER has a semi-passive cooling system, so when displaying the desktop, the fans can remain off, and the card draws trace amounts of energy (~20 W). Thanks to dedicated video decoders, it is similar when watching movies. The core temperature is then not the lowest, ~43 degrees Celsius, but certainly safe. In fact, you do not have to worry about the fact that having such an efficient graphics card will have much higher electricity bills. Energy consumption increases only when we run a game, especially a more demanding one with ray-tracing (RTX) and DLSS, which activate additional systems in the GPU.

In the case of my test platform, the power consumption during gaming increased to around 360 W, which means that the card itself needed around 240 W. This is a lot, but these are not shocking values as in the case of the RTX 4080, where you can easily exceed 440 W for the entire platform. In addition, the extensive cooling system makes the card have very acceptable temperatures. Even under heavy load, the GPU temperature did not exceed 64 degrees Celsius, and the fan speed oscillated around 1250 RPM, so it was simply quiet. With the case closed, the card is practically inaudible and did not cause any discomfort to the rest of the household.

Palit JetStream GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER 12GB – Summary

Palit JetStream GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER 12 GB is a great graphics card, it offers performance at a sufficient level to play in 1080p or 1440p resolutions, and it does it in a very cultured atmosphere. Low operating temperatures and low noise coming from this design are big advantages, and the only drawback may be the physical size of this card. Thanks to this, however, it can work passively to a large extent, which will certainly be appreciated by people who have invested a lot in a quiet cooling system for their computer. The suggested retail price of GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER at around PLN 3,000 seems quite attractive. This model will probably not be chosen by owners of the RTX 40 series, but if you use a GPU from the previous generation, the tested model will certainly provide a noticeable increase in performance.
